Here is what I learned from Gil George (Funco Motorsports) in the 1970s for checking to see how much the suspension will travel up and down.
You install the axle with CVs on one side. A small piece of tubing that will slide over the wheel stud is used for a crank handle for spinning drum when checking for the CV bind.
CVs are installed dry
Slowing drop suspension towards lowest point while spinning drum. When you feel CVs starting to bind (you may or may not hear clicking), You then raise suspension up 1/2in. That is where you make the lower stop for suspension travel.
Then you raise suspension up until you feel the bind while spinning drum and drop down 1/2in and that is your upper point for a suspension stop.
If using a rubber or urethane bump stop away make so it if gets broken the steel bump stop will still stop suspension before breaking a CV joint.
Now do this same thing for the other side.
Now that you have determine where the stop need to be, you have to mock them up before finding out where and how the shock should mount.
A 10in shock will not work for 3x3 arms correctly. You will never get the travel out of the suspension that it is design to get.
You could mount the lower shock forward of were it should be placed properly and get the travel. It will be too soft and not control the suspension as it cycle. You could revalve the shock to make it stiffer, but then it going to get the shock hot and it will stop working, possibly causing piston in the shock to bind and break or bend the shaft.
The only proper way to use 3x3 arms is to use at least a 12in travel shock.
I highly recommend getting Hibbard's book, "Prepping Baja Bugs and Buggies". Even though it is dated it still has information that is in use today.
