Damn car is fighting me every step of the way...
Started the brake bleeding tonight, and as I was adjusting the brake push rod, it it sheared off halfway through the threads. Got it to work enough to start the bleeding process, and one I had done the first round on the back and moved to the front, I noticed a spraying sound whenever I pushed down on the brake pedal. Turns out one of the pressure light switches completely failed and was leaking fluid internally _________________ Vehicles:

I feel your pain... Our brakes fought use from the start as well and we had to replace all 3 master cylinders before all was said and done.
Just keep fighting and you will be driving that Hot Rod in no time!!! _________________ Cheers!

Got my new switches in today, so hopefully I'll have the brakes finished up by this weekend.
On the other hand, we tried to start up the car yesterday to try and move it under it's own power. But we couldn't get it to start. We were not getting spark, and power was going into the coil but not out of the coil. Ran to work and got a new coil, didn't help. We thought it was an issue in our wiring, but it turns out that the electronic ignition module in the dizzy burnt out. It's a Pertronix Ignitor 2, which just so happens to cost $115 for a replacement
This car is gonna be the death of me

Updates!
It's taken me 3 months to replace 2 brake light switches!
Been puttering around on my car all week, I've got the brakes bled, and a bit done on the interior.
Picked up points and condenser today, and I plan on slapping them in tomorrow and seeing if I can get my car to run again.... Just in time for me to leave for college

Thanks!
May and June were both busy as hell. Two college visits, graduation in early June, all the finals and stuff associated with that. Then, gone for a week in June for Orientation. July has just been busy with getting ready to go, and working. And I lost motivation for a bit on the project.
But with a little bit of luck, and maybe some starting fluid, my car will run again today

'Tis a sad day
A couple days back I put my car up for sale on craigslist. I wasn't to keen on getting rid of it, so I put a price on it that I thought nobody would pay ($3500). It was just my luck that someone called me last night, and has decided he wants to buy it. He plans to pick it up Saturday (tomorrow) for $3100.
Here's the tl:dr of my mentality. I really wanted to keep this car since I put so much time and invested a hefty chunk of change into it, and I do like it. Unfortunately, even if I did finish the project this next summer I wouldn't bring the car out to Iowa where I'm going to school for a multitude of reasons, namely I wouldn't trust it to make the trip, and it would be useless in the winter. So I've ended up in a tough spot since I wouldn't be able to save enough to buy a decent vehicle in the summer, so one of my vehicles needed to go. There was no way in hell that I would get rid of my truck (too rare for that), so it came down to the bug.
What is killing me even more is the buyer doesn't want to wait until I'm home for winter break in 9 days. I would've felt a little better about it if I could've been the one to round up all the parts and help load it and all that sort of thing, but I can't.
In the long run, this is the best option since it's not something I could bring here, and having 2 project vehicles isn't an option.
I'll report back if the sale actually goes through.
--
Anyways, it's been a fun ride guys! I appreciate all the help and support you guys have given throughout the project. I'll lurk around for a while, but it's gonna be a few years before I start my next bug project

You should be ok as long as you sold it and not gave it away...
Just means you can start looking another project, once you get one it's like a sickness. |

Bummer. Glad to hear you got a good amount of money for it though. Now don't go wasting that money on hookers and blow! Save it for a bigger and badder project car! _________________ 69 Baja Bug- 1914cc. Mid-travel suspension.

Well (un)fortunately(?) it didn't sell today. On one hand I'm glad since it's not gone, but on the other hand I had already started shopping for another car so...
The vehicle I buy with the money from this sale won't be a project. I need something that';s reliable so I can bring it out here next year.
-
The next baja I want to build is already all planned out it will probably be an turbo ecotec powered mid-long travel car

funny thing is i daily my baja..... more so when snow is predicted. i have some heating issues that i've just been to lazy to address but i wear carhartt overalls at work all winter anyhow.
you have a bit of time in that car......i didn't know about the fuel sending unit for the aluminium tanks until this thread - thank you
also thank you for restoring some faith i had lost in your generation as far as love and enthusiasm for cars and restoring them right.
check my sig i have a "big boy ford also" i like to cruise in it from time to time but people go crazy about the baja ...... and its really rough compared to the truck....
good luck in college and maybe something might work out where you can keep the baja.... _________________ 68 swing axle baja ( making 4x4s look stupid )

Well my car didn't sell over break. And in a way, I'm not too upset. I've started thinking about it again, and I'm starting to consider finishing the car this summer. I'm so close, just have to push the last little bit and get the car done.
I'm starting to gather up a list of parts that I'll need, as well as some things that I want if I have the money. _________________ Vehicles:

Once again, I had a buyer flake out on me.
I had been talking with him for about a month, answered every question he had, linked him here, and waited until he had the money. He seemed serious, and finally drove out to take a look at it today
Then decided not to buy since it was for his son who was going to be leaving for college in 3 weeks. Why he didn't say this before he drove 100+ miles out is beyond me.
Anyway, I was really banking on this so that i didn't have to deal with the car when I got back next week. And now I do.
It's just frustrating

Yeah, having a baja bug is a bit like having herpes. It'll act up every now and then but you're just never getting rid of it.
I did not steal that joke. _________________ "when i go to drive it i get to like 5-10 mph it is at high rpms and gets higher the faster i go when i shift up to second the rpms drop is this normal or what and this is my first vw please help" |
