is this a problem? the metal that seems to have ground off is pretty thin, ...Its been almost 30 years since ive pulled a vw engine, so i dotn know if that kind of "cut out" looking part to the hole is normal or not

There may be something else loose like the front mount that was causing it to move around some! I would install new motor mounts trans mounts etc.. should be ok. It will be interesting to see how things fit afterwards.

I think you will be okay with that little bit of notching. It probably is just from a PO trying to install the engine with difficult clutch alignment.

thats the plan..its been sitting for a long time, and hopefully once i get the boys bus done i can get back to working on this one.

It does look like it was taken offroad by the PO (its been sitting since @1983?)

wbrown- most likely..when i bought it, the guy had the original engine pulled, and had some big bore monstrosity in it-he never actually drove it, just installed it and then found a split bus a day or so after, so sold me this to help finance that project..He then replaced the original motor, so that could very well be the cause.
