Quick update: Herman has been running really great, starts right up even after sitting for a couple weeks at a time. This car primarily lives outside now since the garage is occupied by the single cab so I hope to be able to extend my garage this summer if I can only find time.
Well I found some time to go to a local car show with my Dad on Father's Day, the guy who helped me the most with this project. Even though its been done for a couple years now just want to say thanks again.

Took Herman out for a nice long ride, about 110 miles round trip last week. My wife's boss has graciously offered up space in his warehouse so I can keep Herman out of the elements. Best part is its 3 miles from my house so I can go check on him or take some rides if the weather is decent.
Here I am at a local samba member's house picking up parts for my single cab:
And in the warehouse. He's in good company since there are Mercedes in that trailer.

Its almost officially show season in the Northeast so its time to get Herman out of the warehouse, hopefully in the next few days.
Here is a sneak peak of the new wheel color. This is my interpretation of the original since no one has the paint codes or can say definitively what the wheel was supposed to look like on a Prairie Beige oval. I just got tired of the black and white and thought this might compliment the car.
Rustoleum Khaki - outer rim (matches my exterior)
Rustoleum Colonial Red - inner rim (matches my interior)

These are all the states I have driven to since I first got on the road in May 2012. I buy them on ebay. Thanks!
Alright so I got the transaxle out last week, and installed the rebuilt transaxle last Saturday. Since then I have been rebuilding wheel assemblies.
Here are the two transaxles next to each other. I had to swap axle boots, starter, throw-out bearing, bowden tube plate, trans mounts/carrier, and front mount.
Here I am using a gear puller to remove the rear wheel bearings. I re-used these bearings because they are German and new as of 4 years ago (only drove about 6k miles), also you need the inner and outer spacer for the new unit.
I replace the backing plates with nicer original ones which I cleaned up. I will save the old ones because oval parts are getting rarer!
This is where you need to be neat. Its actually tons of fun if you are organized. I used K2 Curyl because its from Germany and WORKS!
I am going to inspect the clutch and rear main seal before re-installing motor, but I am almost done! So far I have 7 hours into the job.

Schwing, I'm not trying to be negative, I just want to let you know for next time, when you pull a bearing and want to reuse it you need to use a bearing separator so you pull/remove the bearing from the inner race not the outer. that way you don't side load the bearing to be reused. Man I wish I had your ride. |

It's nice to see that gearbox has found a home. I'll have to let Wilfried know! _________________ I will never lie, but sometimes the truth changes.

Interesting, thanks for the info. These came off pretty easy so maybe I didn't stress them out too bad???? At least I hope.
Thanks for the compliment I have wanted an oval rag since high school and I turn 40 next month .
Feels good to give this car attention again. I have the flu or something so I have missed time getting the engine back in, maybe this weekend? _________________ Shadetree Westy

Glad to here that they came off easily. I'm an old mechanic and have seen the worst, I always try to educate and pass down the skills I learned. today I taught a young man 40ish how to weld. |
