I am looking to purchase a pair of 7" widened smoothies for my '63 bug. Will the rims bolt up to a stock drum? Or are spacers needed? If so what size?

What tire size generally goes well with 7" widened smoothies?

7" wide wheels will bolt up to a stock wide five drum. I am puting 7's on my 63 as well, Iam useing 225/60/15 tires but I have"nt put them on yet, I"ll let you know how they fit.

A 215/60- 15 (25.1" tall) fits a 6- 7 1/2" rim, is closer to stock VW height and will be a little easier to fit than the wider tire; exactly where it sits in relation to the fender edge will depend on the offset of the wheel. The 225/60 is also a little taller (25 1/2- 25 3/4", which is not that much), but if you aren't running a lot of power you may feel it.

Depending on the offset of the wheel, you may or may not need spacers; you'll have to mount them and see. Al

The offset is key. The stock offset is 3.75" so if you stick to that you should be fine.

7" with stock backspacing on a short axle car will put the wheel lip 1/2" away from the fender lip with. At least that's what my '64 measures with 5 degrees of camber. You'll have to stretch the tire to keep from rubbing, like 185 wide. No way a 205 or 225 would ever fit if the backspacing is stock. You could run more backspacing if you wanted a wider tire.

Incorrect, the stock wide 5 type 1 smoothie backspace is 3.25".
Some people have claimed to have run 4" backspace on early "short" type 1 axles and stock drums, but I suspect they are measuring incorrectly. I ran 8" wide rims, with 3.75" backspace, and 225/55/15 under stock fenders. The tires always rubbed a clean spot on the spring plate, and fender lip. Room for a credit card and no more..

175/55 on 6 inch widened on the front
205/60 on 7 inch widened on the back

Yes, I believe they were.

The rear wheels were purchased through thesamba.

I know this is an old post but this is the exact setup I'm going with. Is your beam narrowed 4" or 6"?

and can you tell me if the rear was narrowed at all? I have a 4" narrowed beam but am trying to figure out how wide I can go in the rear with stock offsets and not rub my fenders. Mine is fully bagged too so need to be able to tuck the rears.
