Hey guys, I haven't posted in a while but I'm back since I just bought myself two more bugs. I got rid of my last bug, my '67 Baja last July and of course I can't go bugless for more than a few months so I relapsed and bought number 8 and number 9 of bugs I've owned Laughing. They came as a package deal, the yellow car is a '73 standard with a running 1600 DP and does yard drive. It needs a little pan work on the rear passenger side but nothing too major. I believe this car was restored in the 90s as the paint still shines, and in other places shows that it was a repaint. All the door cards, dash, gauges, steering wheel ect, the little stuff shows to be in nice shape but the front seats are garbage. Back seat is reasonable driver quality. The car has 4 panasonic 6x9's, two in the back two in kick panels up front which sound nice thru the ancient Pioneer digital cassette deck. This one will be my new daily driver. The other car is a 1976 Fuely bug that was converted (very nicely) to a carb. Right now theres no spark so I have to figure that one out, and the brake line from the front to the rear is rotted and has taken out some floor panel with it Confused. This car is not pretty, the hood is garbage and the floors are pretty trashed but the rest is solid believe it or not. It may become a parts car, or I may replace the floors and brakes and drive it too. Plan for the yellow car is go up 2 inner splines on the rear spring plates and run Monroe MA756 air shocks in the front with a torsion delete kit with seperate lines, and next spring it'll be getting a turbo on the stock 1600 with a holley 4 barrel. This car will be driven thru winter so I will need functioning heat, that is a priority. Anyway, I'll be updating this thread as things progress. Heres some pics for now

Here they are the night they were delivered, kinda neat that these two haven't left each other since the 90s despite going to 3 different owners

Also, anyone know if this is the factory fuel pump? Its on the '76 which was converted from FI to carb. It is running just like that to the hard line and then directly to the carb. Anyone know what pressure these run at?

That is not a factory fuel pump.

Since its been converted from FI to carb, someone installed a tiny little electric pump, since the FI blocks do not have a hole for a mechanical fuel pump.

Those range in PSI, Most of the time, a regulator is needed to get the correct 3psi for carbs.

Thats what I figured. I noticed the lack of a mechanical pump or cutout for it so I figured it was the original FI engine rather than a swapped in carb engine. I thought I'd find an electric pump under the tank and sure enough, I did. I'll test the fuel pressure but I know this car was a daily driver in its current configuration for years (15+ years ago) so I'm guessing the pump was the correct pressure but guessing doesn't prevent fires so I'll check it Laughing.

Haha thanks. Yeah the brown car is rough but really the yellow car just needs an exhaust and a bit of TLC to be a driver. Thursday I'm going to pick up a lightly used header and single muffler for $50 so I can run the car without waking the neighborhood.

Alrighty so, update time. I picked up a bunch of my parts out of storage and I also found this old header that someone butchered and put a glasspack on with some real garbage welds and hardware store bends Rolling Eyes came on a Baja I used to own. So, I cut it up to make a new exhaust for the yellow '73. I still need to tack weld it and bolt it on to check fitment with the rear apron which I need to wait for my auto dim welding helmet to charge, which I need sun for, which I don't have Laughing. Anyway, I found this rather strange thing connected to my spark plug wire and was hoping someone could identify it? Theres no tach or aftermarket gauges in the car, it looks factory and has a whitish greyish wire coming off of it that goes into a harness. I've had 3 '73 bugs and never seen this before. Any ideas?

Heres the wire I'm talking about

Yeah I dunno what its about. I figured it wasn't factory, if it isn't then its a really clean install for whatever it is. Like I said theres no tach in the car or obvious aftermarket wiring in the front trunk, I'll have to dig deeper and try to trace the wire.

Much appreciated, mystery solved. Kinda crazy that this is till on the car, I might keep it on.

Laughing something like that

Side note, I was just outside working on the car trying to get the old exhaust header off, what a PITA. I'd like to be able to get my impact wrench on there and zip the old nuts off the studs. If I can't get the exhaust off in the car I might drop the engine, it only takes a half hour to do anyway.

Well good news and bad news. Good news, I cleaned the cap, points, and rotor on the brown '76 and threw a battery in it. I got it to fire on starting fluid so I put some gas in the float bowl and it kinda sorta ran for a few seconds at a time but the throttle pedal is stuck so I can't really manipulate the throttle to try and keep it running. The throttle on the carb isn't stuck its just the pedal so I need to free that up or I have another non stuck pedal cluster out of a '73 in my spare parts bin. Now the bad news, I snapped an exhaust stud on the yellow '73. Who knew a rotted out exhaust would have rusty studs/nuts Rolling Eyes. One nut came off clean on the other head but its a PITA to get to the other one, and I snapped a stud on the other head and I can't get a grip on the other nut so the engine is coming out and I'm going to use some persuasion (vice grips and a blow torch) to try and get the rest apart and then try to get that snapped stud out or drill it out. Once thats done I can test fit the new exhaust and weld it up.

Updates! So since I last posted I got the car in the garage and up on stands. I ended up getting the nut off the last stud on the driver side without incident (other stud on that side snapped however) and on the passenger side I got 1 nut off with no incident, the other nut however I had to get a bit creative and cut up the old rusty header to get a socket on. A sawzall, a punch, and a hammer and 5 minutes later its out. The actual stud pulled out of the head however so I need to replace it or use a bolt. I'm gonna try to get the broken stud out of the head but if I can't then I'm just gonna throw the new header in with 3 out of the 4.

I dunno, I suppose that'd make sense. The car is a 4 speed manual and has been since new as far as I can tell. Of course lord knows where the engine came from if its not original Laughing

That's a very good point I didn't even notice that. That is the autostick pattern. Well damn maybe the car was converted at one point to stick shift? It's definitely a 4 speed manual now lol trust me I've driven it. If someone went thru the trouble of installing a clutch cable tube and doin the conversion instead of buying a 4 speed car factory they must have really liked the car.

Yesterday I removed the fuel lines/filters and drained them and saw how disgusting the gas was so today I pulled off the carb and gave it a much needed cleaning. Lots of red dirt n nastiness in there and some of what dripped out was a pure-yellow. Not a gas yellow but like, highlighter marker yellow Question Oh well. I'll be running new lines and pulling/cleaning the tank. If the tank is beyond cleaning I'll use the one out of the gold car. Anyway, I have this piece of the autostick system stuck on my intake manifold and I was wondering if there was a way to get rid of it? Also, they had a hose going from the top vacuum barb directly to the vacuum barb on the intake below the carburetor plate, would this open this big solenoid thing and cause an air leak? Forgive my ignorance of autostick cars Laughing I have another stock intake I can throw in if this ones gonna cause me problems.

More updates. Pulled out the gas tank the other day, the inside is very rusty and the gas I drained out of it was disgusting. The fuel filter let out some nice chunky nastiness also

Believe it or not, much to my suprise considering the condition of the floors and paint on the '76 (gold car) the gas tank is mint inside! So, I grabbed it and cleaned it up a little, wire-wheeled off the surface rust on the outside to make sure there were no holes and there aren't. I'm gonna slam that in and run it, its already baffled and has a feed and return incase I ever decide to swap a watercooled fuel injection engine in the car Cool

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

While I had the tank out I noticed how gross the master cylinder looked and despite the fact that it worked, I decided to be safe rather than sorry and buy a new one. I learned about the importance of brakes when my low rider super beetle's brakes went out at 60 mph. I about shat myself

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Heres the old one
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Heres the mess, and yes I am replacing the rubber resivour hose with proper german stuff I'm gonna order when I order my header install gasket kit

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

New one in mostly. Ignore the piece of black fuel line hose, I was considering putting it together with fuel line hose temporarily just to move the car around but I think I'll wait.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So there we go, some progress. Also, the car will be getting a turbo installed. I was planning on waiting to do this for a couple months but while I have the car apart (brakes being done, gas tank out, carb off, exhaust off, ect) I figured nows the time. Just a simple draw-thru with a Saab T25 I'm hoping to pick up in the next couple days. I have a Mallory Hyfire 6 box to control boost ignition retard and I have a carter 2 barrel I'll be trying in a draw thru setup. If it doesn't work out I'll get the usual Holley 390 but I figured I have it kicking around so I'll give it a shot.
