Boy, your build sure has taken a few crazy turns! Keep at it. I love that new garage, does it have heat?[/quote]

I plan on using the detached garage for seasonal storage. I will be trenching power to it next summer, but all my work is done in the attached garage. I just ran a sub panel from my basement to the attached garage to power an electric heater, outlets, and lights. Once I finish with the electrical, I'll get it insulated and sheetrocked. I have to use a kerosene heater to keep me warm without the insulation. It's loud, smelly, and potentialy unsafe, so I'm looking forward to being able to soley heat with the electric heater!

Time for an update! I removed the apron by drilling out the spot welds.

I welded in the void, then drilled two holes on each side. This way I can use the felder bolts to attach the apron.

As you can see from my avitar, I own a early style Bay Window, so I am spoiler by how easy it is to remove and install an engine. A bug's engine bay is a bit more cramped, giving me more reason to want a removable apron! Laughing I have been so spoiled with the Bay, I was dumbfounded when I realized I couldn't roll the engine straight into the bug. Confused No biggie though, I just turned the engine sideways a bit, slid it in, and squared it back up.

Here I test fit the fenders, and things look pretty good.

Wiring is the main item I need to complete before I can start testing things out. I have an order in to GermanSupplyScott for electric connectors and a crimping tool. It's been a month and he hasn't responded to emails or IMs. Confused I'll wait a bit more, but really?! Evil or Very Mad

I've got the majority of wiring complete. All my lights works besides the high beams. These F-style connectors work really well! Here is a shot of the ignition wires:

I had some issues starting the engine. I thought the fuel pump would prime itself, but I was mistaken. I ended up filling the carb bowl through the vent tube, then I cut a plastic fuel filter in half and I used it as a funnel to fill the fuel line on the outlet side of the fuel pump.

I set the timing static, then checked the advance with the engine running. I was using a 30 PICT-2 carb and a SVDA distributor. I wasn't getting enough advance, so I read up on it and found out this wasn't a good combo, as the 30-2 doesn't have enough vacuum for the dist. I've got a 30/31 on order to make it work better. This is the combo I use on my 70 bus, so I know it works well, plus it will be nice to have the same setup on both vehicles.

I've gotta crawl under the car and check my transmission mounts....I sure hope it's that simple Mad

Now that the engine starts and idles nice, I've been looking into the shifter. It doesn't go into any gear easily. I've set the clutch pedal freeplay, confirmed the shift linkage wasn't loose, and tried different shift plate locations without any improvement. It shifts easily when the engine isn't running.

I placed it in gear with the engine off, then started it. The trans began clunking around pretty bad! I have no history on this trans, so it could be shot for all I know. I was nervous I was going to damage the engine, so I didn't attempt to try it again.

I'm thinking it will be easiest to pull the engine, check the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and trans mounts.

It's been two months, better update the build process. First off my wife and I are patiently awaiting our first child....a boy!!! Due date is today, but it looks like it's going to come late. Had to make something for his room:

So, last post I mentioned the transmission wouldn't go into gear easily, and when I started the car in gear with the clutch in it would clunck pretty violently. I had my wife start the car in gear with the clutch in so I could feel around under the car. She quickly determined that the clunk would stop when she let the clutch out an inch or two!! Now we're getting somewhere Very Happy

I added more freeplay and now it works nice and smooth. I really have no idea why it was doing this. It is like the TO bearing was pushing into the PP too much. In the back out my head, I'm thinking I should pull the motor and look at it, but the other part of me is saying it's okay....nothing to worry about. Confused

We installed all the windows, cleaned and geased the rollup screw assembly. They really needed it! It went from super hard to crank, to butter. I got my rims blasted and powdercoated flat black and installed new tires. Getting ready for the road!
