Hi,

What other stock steering wheels will fit on a Vanagon? Mines 1986 doka and recently the horn ring got ripped - too many keys on my keyring and one got stuck in the gap. Costs 25 bucks for the replacement, which I could spring for, but it got me thinking. I whipped off the wheel and it has the 17mm toothed shaft. Golf I, II and maybe III, Jetta, Polo, Caddy, Passat, and some Audi steering wheels.. ?

Thanks

For many years VW used the same splines on the steering shaft. I have seen where others have installed steering wheels from other models of that era. I believe the main problem is that the Vanagon had a fairly large diameter steering wheel and if you replace it with one from a sedan, it may block the view of the gauges. This will bump your post.

Thanks - I saw the 'Eurovan' /T4 is also a fit. Do they have the same horn ring or at least a compatible one if anyone knows? I need to put the doka through the TUV/roadtest

I've got a 4 button GTI wheel. Almost direct swap.
Smaller dia, makes reading gauges harder. Covers warning lights since I'm tall. Definitly need power steering. Makes getting into the van much easier as I have long legs.

Overall, worth it for me. Might not be for some.

OK - Reading up all that info, seems like Eurovan/T4 is best pick for me. I think I'll try pick up a early non-airbag Eurovan/T4 wheel with a good horn ring and swap the horn rings at least...for the TUV, then maybe the wheel. Thanks.

porsche too, have one in mine.

Another thing to consider>: while the splines match up, some of these other wheels will leave the auto-turn cancelling arm just barely out of reach. Depending on how far that gap is, some can be fairly easily made to work with careful adjustments.
