|
|
alright so now I now how to install seat belts into a 1963 beetle. This year they made the large holes but didn't actually have belts. So you are going to have to buy the adapters that screw into the holes, seat belt kits, brackets and possibly mounting plates (If you want added strength)
Here is an album of photos I took of how to install the retractable belts. I don't really feel like writing up a full on how to guide but I'm more than willing to answer questions.

The things that threw me off where finding the holes. Well it turns out that my pans were replacements so they didn't have the holes. So I ended up having to drill my own holes. I took pictures of this because I could't really find a good resource on where they went. The other thing that scared me a little was cutting into the b pillar area between the door and rear side window. But don't worry it should be there. Just look at all the photos I took for reference. Thanks PS. I've got the brackets that I am going to be welding into the floor to replace the washer setup for extra strength. |

Suggest you go back and replace the tunnel bolts with case hardened |
Okay so I don't know jack about steal. The adapters came with the reddish looking and the belts kits came with the silver ones. Are either of them "Case hardened?" I'm assuming that one is harder than the other. |

If you look at the top of the bolt in photo # 3 you will notice that it DOES NOT have any markings .
Now look at photo # 8 the "off color " bolt has a design pattern on the top designating the hardness of the bolt .
There are several designs designating the strength of bolts . Go to a hardware store and get a lesson from someone who knows .
The belts won't do any good if the bolt snaps off in a collision .
This " old guy " is trying to keep everyone who does this SAFE . _________________ 63 two fold rag

Six lines OK, less than six lines not OK.
Three lines = Grade 5 SAE
Six lines = Grade 8 SAE
Metric bolts do not have the lines on the heads. Instead just the metic numbers. Grade 8 SAE = Grade 10 in metric.
Oh, to "Steal" is to take something from someone without permission.
"Steel" is the material most threaded fasteners and out old VWs are made of.

Your bolts with 3 marks are a grade 5 case hardened automobile grade. The ones with 6 marks are grade 8 and are pretty much heat treated all the way thru. So your good to go.If the bolts were metric they would have numbers on top designating there hardness. |
