Sadly no real updates ...
The video game company I was working for is in the process of going bankrupt, so I have had to change jobs and will be living in Copenhagen for a couple of years, the ghia is mothballed and in storage till I get back.

I did manage upgrade to a tec3 fuel injection computer before putting it away but had to get on a plane for Europe before I could start it up.

That's sad...but on a positive note...see you at Hessisch Oldendorf next year. Very Happy

Sorry to hear about that, you could always teach at savannah college of art and design if you'd like. They have a game design college here.

So ... My friend Steve and I dusted off the ghia the other day and got it running with the Tec3. It would only run on two cylinders (2&4), after checking everything else we checked the valves and it looks like #1&3 intake valve does not open. So we pull the rocker assy and felt the cam lobe movement with the pushrod while turning the engine over. It seems that the cam is round, the lobe is completely missing. I have yet to check magnetic oil plug for cam sludge but I expect it to be there.

The cam is a custom grind Webcam 86a 112 LC, the lifters are Udo tool steel lifters. Usually the cam eats the lifters, but I think the lifter ate the cam in this case. Yet another teardown is needed Sad

Has anyone had any problems with Udo lifters eating cams? One theory is that the can lobe got rusty while sitting for a year.

No big news to report, on Oct 1st I moved into my new place in sunny Montreal and set up my garage. Today I pulled the T1 turbo engine for teardown and inspection, while that happens the T4 will go in and hopefully be back on the road for summer 2014.

Today I tore down the T1 2332turbo afte driving it for about 4000klm and found some nasty surprises:

Smoked Webcam 86a 112LC & pitted Udo Lifters. Is it even possible to regrind these?

Cylinders have no wear but the plating is flaking off on one of my chinese made QSC Nikasil cylinders, I will be replacing these with cast iron Mad

I have a theory as to why the cam is round. It could be because the cam relies on oil slinging off he crank for lubrication, but the crank and rods are starving for oil, I think this is because I have been using the wrong bearings for my straight drilled crank. Luckily I never got a chance to rev it very high and do any serious damage to the crank.

I'm running Udos and a 115LC 86A. I'm hoping I don't have the issue you have!

3000 miles on it.

Type 4 engine is in the car while I am rebuilding the Type 1 turbo. It is almost ready to start up, I am Still waiting on a couple of hoses for the oil cooler.

I have the Silverline bearings and put the groove in all the mains. I also contacted Udo about the Tool Steel lifters that got pitted and he sent me a new set which was very cool of him (Thanks Udo Smile )

Did your valve clearances change noticeably when they were wearing, or did you find them failing only after taking the engine apart?

Initially I did not notice any change in valve clearances, the cam got destroyed very quickly.

The car was sitting for a year so there was probably no oil on the cam due to the detergent (I was using Swepco), then when I started it up I let it idle. I think I probably should have reved it up to 2000 rpm for a bit, almost like a second break in to get some oil splash on the cam.

It was running on all four for a few minutes, then cylinders 1&3 started to miss, I figure that is the moment when the intake lobe went round and the intake valve was not opening at all.

Today I spent some time sandblasting and modifying a brasila shroud for my next buildup of the type 1 turbo engine.

I added a FI shroud venturi ring and removed the enclosed oil cooler shroud to allow for the german dogouse tin and hoover bit.
I also relocated the throttle tube to the FI location as it allows more room for a barrel chargecooler.
I diddn't get a chance to paint it yet so its zinc coated for now

Here is an update on the rebuild progress:
The short block is together now ...

I have a small problem, I want to use forged pistons on this engine, the ones I have are Hypereutectic. I have been looking around and have not been able to find any forged pistons for 92mm jugs, AA used to offer them for sale but the website says "sold out".
I have been checking out some old posts here on the Samba and have found another option:

I have noticed that the wrist pin diameter is 0.866, mine measure 0.864, they look like a nice alternative to Type 1 pistons, has anyone used these before?

Hi CLKWRK

May I give you a mighty 20th page praise on your build (a little late).

The detailed information you have given in this post, and the easy-to-read manner in which you have presented everything is nothing short of superb.

May I also apologise for our PM Tony Abbott for calling your country "Canadia" when he was there in Ottowa meeting with Steve Harper in June 2014. (LOL) At least he can catch a frisbee!

Just looking at the price of those pistons you posted; I hope its $395 for all 4 pistons, because the window says Quantity 1! Although I see you have 4 items in the shopping cart. Do the pistons also include the rings etc ? Or are they extra?

Your build is inspirational...I will need to get moving on mine! Family and work stuff is getting in my way.

My NY resolution is to crack on finally.

best regards and Happy New Year mate!
