I can't seem to find any info on what pre-made skid plates will fit a stock or class 11 standard beetle (1973 to be exact) front and rear and connects to the bumpers.

Are there any or is this something I'll have to custom make?

Thanks!

Front you'll probably have to fab yourself. Rear, most vendors sell premade ones, check chirco.com

I thought those were made for chopped and caged engine rear Baja only?

This one bolts onto a stock bug (front tranny mount, rear engine case).

http://www.mooreparts.com/5475-AC800000-W*/?gclid=CJnapvrszcICFaHm7AodZmkA_A (you will need to copy/paste the entire link, the questionmark seems to mess up the link)

I used one of those with custom tubes tied into the stock bumper brackets, and had a custom skid plate built for the front. I have not seen a "bolt on" skidplate for the front, however I have seen people make their own and bolt a skidplate to the front of the bumper, and to the floor pan underneath the beam. Neither of the bolt on options are very sturdy, but certainly do offer some protection

I thought that defeated the purpose of a skid plate though?

I am not suggesting it's a robust solution, just wanted to provide you with info regarding what is out there that is "bolt-on"... I agree it's a pretty weak set-up, that's why I showed you how I achieved what you are looking to do. Very Happy I don't think the "pre-made" skidplates you are looking for exist, so you'll have to design your own.

I've seen this done alot for the front (would be bolt on), but does not seem to provide much protection either. I think you are best off spending the money to have something fabricated for you.

Look for my post in that thread. The pre-made skidplate should NEVER be mounted to the engine case. However they are great. I've owned one since the early 70s and it has worked great the whole time. I've had to straighten it many times, it keeps on going. It should be mounted to the engine CAGE instead of the case. In that post mentioned above, I described how to mount it. Some pics would probably help too.

Here's one showing the "hammer it straight" deal.

This pic shows the rear mounts turned outboard to mount to the bumper cage, instead of inward to mount to the engine case.

The right side bracket I didn't need to drill holes even. The left bracket required drilling one hole.

I hear you Bill, I am well aware of Dave's track record and reputation... He would kick my ass to China and back any day of the week! That being said, I want to keep the apron and hood on my car looking nice... Even if it probably weighs twice what Dave's does LOL Wink

So what is the source for those? They look to be well made.

Here is mine.

Up here in the VORRA series this is our front style. Wrapped up to top of the bumper. Thick 1/4" plate aluminum gets hammered!

I actually make those. This batch was CNC punched from 11ga CRS and then formed and welded.

If you play inside of the Class 11 arena, they fit real well. If you wanna remove the front bumper and/or upfit a bus trans, then some fab work is definitely required to make them fit.

Thanks for the feedback.

I PM'd you a few questions if you don't mind.

I would love to see these installed on a car?!

I like what you have to offer in your store too.

Will this work on a stock engine with heater boxes and "dog sled" lower cooling tins?

BTW I'm glad you shared your website I have a wish list already, looks like some nice quality craftsmanship and engineering of new products.
