I am looking at buying a 1980 Rabbit Pickup and it has been driven minimally since the engine was rebuilt. The Gentleman said the mechanic who worked on the transmission lost the plug. It's the plug that sits on TOP of the tranny which you can see from inside of the engine compartment and I don't know what to call it to know what to search for in a replacement. Any suggestions? It's not the drain plug. It may be the fill plug?

Most definitely not the fill plug. It is the timing hole plug: http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Rabbit/Transmission/410/1 . Wink

If it is a inspection hole, duct tape will work for a while.

I used a cap from a milk jug for a while, fit right in.
