Looking to see if anyone has a photo of the petcock lever for a 1961 356B?

Would like the size or the length of lever and might just cobble one up.

Any response, would be helpful.
Thanks
Frank

Frank,

My car is a 59 A but I don't think the petcock handle differs from yours? I attach a drawing of my handle that I made for a 356 friend that needed to make one like you. This worked out fine for him. To get the easiest result its best if you can find tubing. Can make from solid but you need real heat to then bend the arm.

The ball on the end of the petcock shaft has to enter the shaft and the petcock handle should be counter bored to the depth shown. In that counterbore you place the black rubber insert shown in the photo with the vice.

The 2 split pin holes are important. The first one secures the rod to the petcock ball end ( which has the hole ) the hole further up the handle has the split pin to act as a stop for the rubber insert. When you secure the handle there is then slight pressure exerted from the rubber insert onto the end of the ball ended petcock shaft.

Hope that makes sense. Measure the distance from the aluminium disk with the res, zu, and aus markings to the petcock ball end should give you an idea if its correct to my drawing.

Roy:

Thanks a lot for the drawing, and I will try to make one. There are two rods
listed on the Porsche Site and starts in 1959.
1. 356.56.101

2. 644.201.241.00

My "B" parts book shows the 644 201 241 00 for my car, so I will try to
get some tubing and work with that. I can't find my early parts book so can't say for sure what & when 356 56 101 was used.

Anyway THANKS for posting up the pics.

Frank

The lever for the T-6/C is different = part number 644-201-241-06. I do not have one to measure.

Brad:

Thanks, but I am dealing with a 1961 356B, T5 Coupe, so will try Roy's sketch

and make one. Just have to find a good piece of tubing.

Frank,

Probably easier to get solid bar. Just drill the end before bending the end with a drill and reamer to be a slide fit over the petcocks ball ended shaft. Drill the 2 split pin holes and then get that other end cherry red and bend it around a former.

Best to drill the end for the petcock shaft in lathe. Easier to get it concentric to the outer diameter. A small engineering shop could do that for you if you don't have access to a lathe.

Making one correctly would be very difficult. Go with an original. Here's one

They turn up pretty regularly at swap meets too.

@ Roy:

I loved your drawing for the lever, but I found one later on the Samba and bought it. I am still going to make one just to see if I can. Thanks for your help.

Frank,

Now that was a nice find!!!

Don't forget the short piece of rubber that goes in the end to contact the ball of the petcock shaft. Might rattle otherwise.

cheers

Roy
