i have made several pairs of 15x7 rims on short tube axles. my current car is a 61 beryl green bug with im thinkin 2 or 3 clicks. set the rims at factory backspace run a 195/60/15.. i still have enough room to go 8" |

What rim shells are you using? Thanks _________________ 1973 standard, yellow, lowered, 3” narrowed front, 1600 blo-thru turbo w/single dell 15.4@86, so far

I eventually made mine. I used junkyard Chevy wheels. 6.5 inch barrels. Cut the centers out replaced with smoothie centers, spun them on the car while on stands and trued them up that way. Welded when done. I'm no pro but took care in my welding and they have been fine for as long as this post is old. That's them in my profile pic... |

I've made several sets of widened smoothies for VW's, both short axle and long axle beetles. I will tell you that with factory offset, on a short axle car, an 8" shell is going to hit the fender badly. IF you pull the backspacing to a tight to the spring plate as it will go, 3.75" then the tire may rub the spring plate, and an 8" rim will just barely tuck, depending on the tire you use.
In reality, a 6.5 or 7" wheel hoop is an easier fit, and will give you more tire than 99% of drivers need |
