nice painting. But the bus pictured isn't up to date for 1954. it seems to be a no rear bumper, white roof, high mirror pre 52 model. They wouldn't have used a 2-3 years old model for official advertising.
That scenery looks very familiar to me. there are two bridges in Italy and Austria that look very close, this could depict an actual road scene, taken from a photo. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

This is an interesting topic, for different reason I strongly doubt I this painting would have been used or designed by a car illustrator.
1) The medium:
Water color is soft and really airy, it's always combined with sharp lines or gradient that give the idea of motion and speed ( for illustration of vehicle in motion) Beyond drawing a beautiful car you want to give the idea of something that's fast, mobile. Here we don't really have any of this lines that gives this effect of motion. it's an easy trick that illustrator uses for advertising.
2) Outline:
I see some stronger line that try to outlined the shape of the bus bus they are a bit shy and not straight. If you look at this add : http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/51bus_german/1.jpg you can see that on these buses you want to emphasize the aerodynamic by having long lines.
3) Angle:
In this situation the angle would have been ether a bird eye view ( to put forward ether how easy it is for the bus to drive up all theses snaky mountain roads,) or seen from the ground to magnify the bus ( like illustration of locomotive of the same era) here it's right at a human 's eye level.
4) Some details:
the roof and the the trees behind are stuck together, there is no depth.
Often water color is mixed with airbrush that makes great effect for chrome and speed.
this is really interesting, I wonder what it is. An illustration of someone who wanted to translate a family picture into water color, a student exercise?
A study?
Do you have any more info about it? |
