|
|
Hey guys,
If you ever wondered what brackish water does to the alloys of your transmission and engine see below.
The engine is similarly shot. Based on advice found around the forums I have decided to come back with a 1200cc 36hp engine. Now I need a suitable transmission with the following criteria:
1.) it has to fit the 1200cc engine.
2.) it has to bolt into the kubel with no modification.
Can you guys set me on the track as to what would fit, and be somewhat available?
Thanks!
Chris |

Are you asking about what this will go on? It will go on a 1943 Type 82 Kubelwagen. If you are asking about the bit of a transmission you can see on the floor in my photos, then yes, I believe that is of a bus transmission. It was acquired by the previous owner in error, I believe. It came complete with some story about having to flip a gear around. Not sure what to make of that... |

I think he was telling you that you probably need to find an early bus transmission. |

Ah, I see. Why a bus specifically? Is it about the lower gear ratio for off road use or the size and design. I guess I mean to ask if any early vw transmission would fit? |

maybe it's to make sure it's compatible with the RGB axles. |

The Barndoor bus transmission ( 1950 - 1955 ? ) evolved from the Kubelwagen transmission, which has the ring gear mounted opposite from the sedan transmission. I'm pretty sure the axles, axle tubes and reduction boxes from the Kublewagon ( or Barndoor Bus will will fit the sedan trans if the ring gear is swapped to the opposite side. I am building a " clone " Typ 82E Off-road Beetle using Barndoor axles, axle tubes and reduction boxes on a " tunnel housing " full syncro trans. Until you get your trans out and apart you won't know if there is anything useable from your trans. Hope this helps. |

a kuebelwagen has RGBs, a bus has RGBs, old bus would fit and have a good ratio for a 36 horse motor.
the "flipping" has to do with the RGBs reversing the direction of the final drive.
beetle transmissions run the opposite direction of a split bus transmission. This can be changed when you open it up by "flipping". _________________ regards

What would I be looking to salvage? Would it be just for spare internals? |

Your clutch release bearing is missing. That will never work properly.

Thanks for all the great information. I will put my ears to the ground for a bus transmission in liu of an original. I see there is a classified add for a kdf transmission here on Samba. The gentleman wants 1000 euros... ouch!
In the mean time, hopefully you gurus can help on this question. The last remaining step before I can pull the transmission/axle,RGB assembly is to deal with the shift rod universal joint. It was already toast but I am not sure how to remove the remaining joint part from the transmission shift rod. How do I get this thing off so I can back the transmission out?

remove the square headed set screw & slide the piece off the shaft. If it's stuck, use something that can straddle around the shaft like a pickle fork & then tap the fork with a hammer to encourage the coupler to come loose.

the swiss army buses did have locking differentials. they might be available for sale, since they are geared VERY low with special RGBs _________________ regards

Pull the gearbox, open it and you will see if you need a complete one at all. Perhaps the internals are still useable or can be overhauled.
Look for a later type 1 gearbox housing only or even a complete one. It's cheaper than a KdF gearbox.
Best regards

Hell yeah, I would pull it apart as well. Once its all apart you could clean everything up and glass bead all the corrosion away. Then paint or clear coat parts as necessary. With holes like that in the case it'll look like the old "cutaway" educational/demo engines and transmissions VW used to have but cooler. _________________ Independent German Auto

Would a later than "barndoor" bus transmission work? I mean will it fit in a kubel without modifications? |
