On the menu bar at the top of this page click on the "Technical" tab and you will find a complete listing of all VW tools. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

Bentley manuals usually have a tool being used in assembly/disassembly, and have the part numbers listed. By final drive, are you talking about the roller bearings on the sides of an IRS diff, and the side cover seals for the CV cups? You can modify a bearing splitter with a flat surface for the diff, and the aluminum wheel bearing race installation tool kits work well for installing the seals. The only time I've ever found any actual VW specialy tools was when a shop was closing up. I started working on transaxles in 2005, and some 10 years later, there are tools I've searched for that I've never found. |

No, I don't play in the sand. I'm a 1/4 mile drag racer. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

Here's what I found in my Bentley. First image is pressing the old seal out.
Second image is the same tool with the base tool flipped 180 degrees to use the opposite end to press the bearing out.
Third is pressing the new bearing race in.
Fourth shows the seal install, but no tool number. Further in the section a similar tool is shown pressing in the rear wheel bearing seal, which may be the same for the trans since they are only 2mm apart in diameter (60mm to 62mm).
And the last pic is the fixture for removing the bearing from the diff. Then the bearing on the diff cover.
So it looks like that gives you; VW 408a, 473, 401, 459/1, 474, 457/1, 457/2, 454, 456, and 458. All said, and done, maybe $1000+ in actual Peiseler Tools...., if you can find them. Reproductions, along with someone being handy with a lathe could probably get you by for less than a few hundred.
Edit: It looks like in the Technical section vwracerdave suggested, it has VW 473 as an oil seal removal, and installation tool. |

It is not that easy to collect all those tools. Had to machine my own.
For bearing races and seals, a regular bearing drift set will work. If it is odd sized, then have the drift machined to size.
But you will need the that stand and plates to remove and R/R lots of things. |

After doing a little searching, it looks like someone is offering left over Snap On reproductions. Snap On would be equal in quality to a Pieseler Tool, but you're going to pay Snap On prices. The 456a stand looks like it has two little adapters so you can use it as VW 452. And they do have the 457 plates to go across. But at $380, and $170, they aren't cheap. They also have the 408a, 454, and 473 ranging from about $50 to $110. Here's the link to the 456a.

gkeeton Thanks for the pics and info
After looking at the prices and very limited availability I think
my best bet is to have a machinist friend of mine make the bearing drift
And I made a tool for the input shaft seal and final drive seal that works well
Thanks again guys

Mcmscott
I found the aluminum bearing seal kit you talked about.
I checked the sizes and they are right on with the final drive bearing
races and seals. The kit is less then $50 thanks 👍👍 _________________ Bill Mc |
