Tony Verna, inventor of TV instant replay, dies at 81
Quote: |
PALM DESERT, Calif. (AP) — Tony Verna, a television director and producer who invented instant replay for live sports 51 years ago, has died. He was 81. Verna died Sunday at his Palm Desert home after battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia, daughter Tracy Soiseth said.
CBS used instant replay for the first time in the Dec. 7, 1963 Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia, after Verna developed a method to cue the tape to pinpoint the play he wanted to immediately air again. He said he was looking for a way to fill those boring gaps between plays during a football telecast.
The concept was so new that when Army quarterback Rollie Stichweh scored a touchdown, announcer Lindsey Nelson had to warn viewers: "This is not live! Ladies and gentlemen, Army did not score again!"
Instant replay quickly became a staple of sports broadcasting, and Verna's innovation gave fans a new way to look at the games. "Not many things you can do in life where you can change the way things were happening before," Verna told The Associated Press in 2008.
Verna would go on to produce or direct five Super Bowls, the Olympics, the Kentucky Derby and even "Live Aid." |

Melvin Gordon, who led Tootsie Roll Industries Inc. for more than five decades, has died at age 95.
Gordon, the company's chairman and CEO, died Tuesday in Boston after a brief illness, said Brooke Vane, a spokeswoman for the company's public relations firm. Gordon ran the Chicago-based confectioner for 53 years, overseeing the manufacture of 64 million Tootsie Rolls a day and other favorites including Junior Mints, Charleston Chews and Tootsie Pops.
Gordon worked a full schedule until last month, the company said.

Ruh Roh! This can't be good.
Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah Dies
RIYADH--Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud has died at about age 91, according to a royal court statement read on state television early Friday morning local time.
Crown Prince Salman has been declared king and Prince Muqrin became Crown Prince, according to the statement.
Born before his father founded the modern Saudi state in 1932, King Abdullah focused his final years on internal and external security threats to a nation he had seen grow into an oil giant and center of political and religious power in the region.
His death removes a bulwark against the democratic and Islamist movements that have roiled the rest of the Arab world since the uprisings of 2011, though his immediate successors are seen as just as conservative as he was, or more.

‘Thorn Birds’ Author Colleen McCullough Dies At 77
Colleen McCullough, the Australian author of 1977 bestseller, The Thorn Birds, which served as the basis for one of the most popular TV miniseries ever, died today on Australia’s Norfolk Island. The novelist had suffered poor health in recent years. She was 77. McCullough was born in New South Wales in 1937 and worked as a neuroscientist before writing the first of her 25 books, Tim. Published in 1974, it was later made into a feature starring Mel Gibson and Piper Laurie.
But she became best known internationally for her second novel, The Thorn Birds. Set primarily on the Cleary family’s Drogheda sheep farm in the Australian outback, the epic traces thorn birdsthree generations over 40+ years and centers on the forbidden love between a young woman and an ambitious Catholic priest. Paperback rights to the novel were sold at auction for $1.9M — a record at the time in the U.S. It went on to sell 30 million copies, making it the highest-selling Australian book ever.
Interest in the novel was further spurred on by the wildly successful 1983 ABC miniseries. Richard Chamberlain, Rachel Ward, Bryan Brown and Barbara Stanwyck starred in the saga that, in its day, became the second most-viewed miniseries in the U.S. behind Roots. |
