Back in 1962, a couple of years before I joined the US Army, a high school buddy finally had enough money to buy his first new car after working 4 straight summers hauling hay and delivering news papers. I went into the military service in July 1964 and in January 1965 I was sent to Germany and the first full year of what ended up as a 21 year carrier in the military. I had been in Germany for almost 3 years before getting orders for Vietnam. While home on leave I hooked up with my friend that had bought the VW Beetle and he told me he had been drafted and was also going to Vietnam. While he was gone his parents parked his 1961/'62 V-Dub in their back yard with a cover over it. Unfortunately my friend was killed in action after 9 months in 1968. In 1985 when I retired with 21 years of service I stopped by my friends parents house and found his VW still sitting parked where he left it in 1967. The last time I was in our old neighborhood in 2011 I heard that my buddy's folks had dies and their estate had been sold in an auction. The VW was still in the back yard with only 2500 miles on it.

I guess sometimes it's hard to let go of something that has a sentimental value.

Bummer that the car sat so long, especially outside.
It probably made them feel better to see it there in the yard.

I have heard of similar stories a few times.

The Beetle was in pretty bad shape from the rust and a couple large tree branches had fallen on it.
