Since it was raining and my wife is gone with the Honda, I figured I should track down the intermittent problem with my wipers.......

Typical......bad ground. Embarassed

I totaled my vert last Tuesday. Broadsided a Cadillac Escalade (of all things) at 45 mph. His fault, not mine, but it wasn't any less painful for my wife and I who, for lack of all the modern conveniences such as frontal & lateral airbags and functional seat belts, took the brunt of encounter.

Only time and the adjusters will determine if the Bug is recouperable at this point, but if she is, I'll spend whatever it takes to restore her to her previous splendor, and then trade her in for the first Brinks Armored Truck I can find with decent tires on it.

And to think we'd only taken her out for a short ride with the top down to air out the dog...[/img]

After wheel balancing, the speedometer was flaky and useless. I looked under the wheel cover, and the hub cap the cable goes thru was knocked loose. That would do it. VW problems are almost NEVER this straightforward, so I celebrated.

Today we drained the over-filled crankcase. (NOTE TO SELF: 3.5 PINTS not quarts.)

Made plans to chase non-spark issues tomorrow, after refilling with proper amount of oil..

Took a look at the weather app and it said it will rain this week. Great time to try out my new rain thingies. Also installed a new glovebox.

Went to pull the hood release on my 69 Bug at the gas station and not much happened . Brought it back home and played with it for 30 minutes before it finally released . White greased every part of the entire release mechanism ( cables, slides ,etc) now it works perfectly . Glad I only needed to get out my lead substitute to add to the gas and not had been in a break down situation on the side of the road in the dark .

The moral of the story = A little maintenance can make a big difference .

Gad, i HATE working on brakes almost more than anything else. I'd rather trace down a short. That said -

I installed a new master cylinder in my '72 Super as the old one was leaking into the tunnel. And I had to replace ALL FOUR bleeder valves on the [EDIT ] WHEEL cylinders. "Speed Bleeder" valves all snapped when I tried to either loosen them to bleed or tighten them after. So multiple bleedings had to take place. Mad A mess, but now it stops on a dime! Very Happy

i have apparently finally broken in the engine i rebuilt last winter. ever since i installed it, i would get a big blue cloud of oil smoke when i started the car up. finally, the other day i cranked it up and .... no big blue cloud of oil smoke. every time i have cranked her up since then, still the same, blue cloud is gone. so that's pretty great.

Finally took "Stormin Norman" for a drive. The first in 18 months since I started his restoration:

I ordered what I hope is the last of the major items before getting my 71 super on the road. Front disc conversion, new struts, ball joints and rear shocks.

Hopefully it is just a short list of fix it things, replacing the torsion bar bushings when I lower the rear and reinstalling the engine.

I built the engine and have touched almost every inch of the car so there's nothing else that could go wrong at this point! (I hope the sarcasm comes through)

Ordered new seat covers from JBugs - blue sapphire tweed 12" inserts w/cream/ivory white vinyl sides. Cleaned the brass of the rotor and inspected and did the same for the distributor cap. Leaned out the carb and advanced the timing, trying to improve MGP which has been really crappy all winter. Finally, went on a nice 50-mile cruise. [EDIT] No pinging w/the change in mix and timing. Ran super nice, no idea of the mileage yet.
