I bought a 1964 vw beetle about 2 months ago. When I first drove it I had to pump the clutch to get it to shift gears. I took it to the shop to get the clutch bled and they told me I had to replace the clutch master cylinder. Keep in mind it has 2 girling style master cylinders. 1 for the brake and 1 for the hydraulic clutch. I replaced the clutch master cylinder and bled it because I broke down last week. The problem I was having is when it idles there is a rattling noise coming from the trans/clutch. when I push the clutch in it goes away but when I try to change gears it grinds and will not go into any gears. On the other hand when the car is off it shifts like there is nothing wrong with it.

Throw out bearing? A likely culprit.

When the engine is off nothing is turning and you don't need the clutch.

Your symptoms are consistent with a failure in your non-stock hydraulic clutch system. You will have to find someone who has the same system for specific advice, in general you need to bleed a system like this just like brakes.
