You're ALWAYS invited down here, but I'd rather fork over money for machine shop work, then food, then rent, than airfare… _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

LOL I don't have any doubts toward your credibility Stuart. I'd love to meet and hang and work on shiz. The money I've saved all has to go to the bus. I don't have any airfare change to spare! Asiab hit the nail on the head
But if you did make it this way, you know you could stay w/ us for free, and we'd feed you, so... lol
Here's what both heads looked like. I didn't do a thing to it at this point.
Now the heads, p&c's and trans are in good hands. I should have them back in a few days. Won't make any more decisions until I see them clean.
My mechanic offered to CC the heads where they meet the cylinders. I didn't want to do any machine work unless I just couldn't help it.
Can anyone tell me, will machining the heads to freshen up the place where they meet the cylinders prolong the life of my engine _________________ -Tony

I would check valve guides out to avoid blue smoke on cold startup. Gotta take the valves out for that anyways.... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

So if money and plane ticket was not in your court to deal with, when are you expecting parts to be done, and then what days are the best for your schedule to have me there? Again, forget the plane ticket, just give me dates here.

Got some photos from the shop today of my 091 being taken apart and cleaned up. Yay!
A new ground strap is in order, I see. Is there any treatment that should be done to the strap to lengthen its lifespan, or is it just a thing you replace every once in a while?
I have a pending order to pick up cv joint shit, cables, and clutch hardware.

Looks like good stuff! And, it comes in red, if you want to cover up your proprietary circuit boards.
This will go on my list of favorite chemical products, along with
Aerokroil
LPS-3
Dow Corning #4 (which you could also use on your ground strap, battery terminals, other electrical connections, etc.) _________________ John

Mum's the word but uh...
I'm getting my cylinders honed for 20 clams tomorrow.
There's a retired mechanic in town from an ACVW shop that closed down that does it in his free time. And it turns out a friend of mine works with this guy. Score!
I'll post a pic of how some of the parts looked after the parts washer.
Now I just have to figure out where the hell I'm going to find 20 wild clams in Oklahoma and how I'll keep them alive until I can barter with the guy for my cylinders. _________________ -Tony

Use some detergent with a nail brush to clean the cylinders, to get the honing grit out of the grooves. The parts washer does not get it all. |
Good Luck

Didn't see the need to take pictures of all the pistons, they all came out the same. This is #3. I will do some gentle scraping to get the rest off- skipping the sand blaster for these little guys (waste of time and money)
Say hi to my kitty!^^^
Thanks TCash, I will exercise extra care when cleaning them up for installation.
Thinking the engine stand will be empty after this weekend, so we can finally get it up on there and starting mic'ing the crank and what not. Crossing my fingers that the shafts aren't worn out. I should have my cylinders back by Friday.
If the heads can be done by the end of February I'll be in good shape!!

Wanted to share my most recent adventure.
The 5th Anniversary of the Oil Capital Air Cooled First Thursday Cruise!
Ultimately 7 buses of all vintages came out, From a 59 double door panel to a 74 bay westy.
We met at an abandoned grocery store (the usual spot) and it was barricaded off! I guess they don't appreciate us. So we whipped around to the other side.
One by one, more buses kept coming. It was awesome.
I only snapped a few shots.
Me and my buddy David B on the way to the grocery store
David has owned his buses for 30+ years, and has likely never cleaned any of them all the way out.
And my friend sold his 68 bay to a guy in town somewhere. He showed up and I reminisced on the few good times I had with that old 68. I almost bought it, test drove it and everything. Scott Bay-O, the 68!
my new phone takes decent pictures, but not at night time!
Barricades up, not ruining the good times!
As we were about to leave, a gray haired older guy pulls up in a super sleek BMW or Mercedes sports car...(I don't care at all for new cars, so I don't make note of makes and models) and he stops by us. Rolls the window down and says, "Can you do me a favor?" and pulls out a bottle of wine from the spirits store across the way. He says, "Enjoy this for me. I had a vw pop top...some of the best times I ever had." This dude was GROOMED, too. Pink pressed button up with cuff links, a Donald Trump hairdo (except natural). After we thank him graciously, he drove that black, stealthy land shark into the night. His license plate said 'SAILING'.
I just gotta say I love being alive
so far. lol _________________ -Tony

Thought I'd post what my rebuild has cost me so far while I'm preparing to hear what the machine shop will have to say about my heads.
Prices are approximate
Rings- $25
Hone Cylinders- $20
Type IV Seal Kit - $74
Trans Refresh (CV seals, nosecone seal, plastic hockey stick ball) - $125
Misc FI parts via Stuart (harness, odds n ends)- $120
Heads, P&C's - parts washer - $40
Approximate Total - $404.00
I have quite a bit saved up for any outcome with the heads. Hopefully it's just new valve guides and exhaust valves and mic'ing teh combustion chambers.
Things coming up next
`Mic Crank and Cam.
`Rod bearings.
`New Hydraulic Lifters.
`Rocker Arms don't match - to be solved soon
`Degrease and Paint tins
`Seal heater boxes and repair exhaust leaks
That's all for now. Will post more when the heads are done. _________________ -Tony

You've not spent very much money so far, based on your list. That's cool. Hopefully your machining measurements will be good. Mine weren't. I have nothing but dead or dying engines staring at me every time I go out to the garage. Best of luck to you!

My vote would be 'probably'.
The machinist I recently took a ruined Type 1 case to for autopsy discussed machining cases to meet the cylinders, and machining the heads to meet the cylinders. All four cylinders must be aligned as perfect as possible to keep decking level and prevent piston scoring. All of that is further related to being squared to the line boring. All of that doesn't matter if the crankshaft was not perfectly turned... which is why he was doing an autopsy on mine. |
