Will an early beetle transmission fit into a type 3? Seems like it would but would narrow the rear suspension? I need a type 3 tranny, and a guy I know has very kindly offered me the one out of his notch if I can get a tranny to put back in it so that it will still roll. I have a beetle tranny, and want to know if I can just straight swap them out.

Yeah, it'll fit, but you'll need to swap the hockey stick if you want to actually use it. Also the splines on the end of the axles are about 9/16ths of and inch shorter, which means the t-3 drums would have to be machined. I believe you could just swap the trans itself, and reuse your old axles, but Russ would have to verify this, as I'm not a swingaxle guy. Wink

The trans is the same except for the "hockey stick". The axles are slightly different. If this was a permanent swap, you could swap the axles over onto the other trans.

Can the "hockey stick" be replaced with the trans still in the car?

Yes, it can if you know how the front shifter housing goes together. I don't recommend doing it unless you have had a transmission out of a T-3 before, and know how things go together.
You will need a gasket for the front housing. The gasket is actuall a shim also.

What year Type 3? I assume older, but I'm not sure why...

If it's a swing, you could find an early short axle and get a narrower rear track. I think you'd have to run bug brakes though.

That's why I mentioned the T-3 drum's snout needing 9/16ths machined off it. The t-1 axle splines are shorter than the t-3.
