I have used a 6 volt gauge in every VW that I have owned. They are fairly accurate but you need one of these so you wont run out of gas. I usually go 170 miles myself.

Amen brother Bill!

That is a beautiful speedo there brother! I won't have a gas gauge in my '59 Double-Cab (as intended on that era DC), but I'm about to install a rebuilt (by Corona Ryan) NOS clear needle trip speedometer to watch mileage so I can refill the tank. I'll post up a shop once it arrives.

I thought there was some adjustability of a 6 or 12 volt gas gauge? Isn't there a paint sealed locknut/screw for tweaking the reading. I've never tried to mess with the factory setting on one, maybe someone out there has?

Bill

No, there is no adjustment. That stud/nut with the ground symbol holds the gauge within the case and also provides a secure ground for the gauge itself, though nearly everyone grounds the gauge via the teeth in the clamp.

I have used both 6 & 12 Volt gages in my '66 Singlecab, new 12 v sender, usually when the tank is full, it reads 7/8 full for a few miles, then drops to 3/4. Since day 1 of driving my Truck, I keep a note book on fill ups, miles per tank, how many Gals. it took, price ect., If I'm close to 200 miles, I start looking for a Gas station. This system has worked well, never had a run out problem.
I also carry 2 Gal. of Gas in the TT area, wrapped tight in a heavy plastic bag, in a box, braced so it will not slide around.

Does putting a 12volt globe in the 6 volt gauge fix the issue? How is this so?
Would this unit work ok?

If you leave the 6V globe ... I think you mean light bulb ... in the guage and run it in your 12V bus the bulb will burn out. You do need a 12V bulb on 12V.

You guys call them bulbs us Aussies call them globes Smile
