Somebody should be getting these notches and restoring them.

Says '65 but looks like a 62-63 model (Notice the wide rear window trim)

Sorry, but this one is NOT a '62, it's a '64. How do I know?? Well, here's a few more pictures of it:

I've known this car since 1990 and have bought a lot of the glass off of it. As far as I am concerned, it is not restorable, unless you have more money than you know what to do with. The pan and heater channels are shot. The windshield is no good. The quarter and rear glass are all sitting in my shed. It's worth 200-300 in parts. The only reason I haven't bought the shell is because I'm lazy. I don't feel like taking 2 days moving cars around to get this one out. It is buried deep in the guys lot.

The '65 I actually saw about 3 years ago. It's up the the Clarkston, WA/Lewiston, ID area. It's in fairly good shape and is an 'N' model, as is the '64 above, although the '64 is dual carbed.

If these two cars are truly Ns they might be worth it. I have only seen one N, ever! Prop rods and all. Can you get out to take more detailed pics Neil???

Unfortunately, the '65 is about 330 miles from me and the '64 is about 275 miles away. On the bright side, on Thursday or Friday I'll be over where the '64 is. I'll try to get better pictures. These pictures were taken about 5 years ago with my crappy first digital camera. I'll try to remember the camera when I head that way. I know the '64 has prop rods.

I finally got my new pictures of this car uploaded. They are all hi-res pictures (700-800K) so they will take quite a while to download if you are on dial-up. I noticed the guy just updated the ad on this car, so I sent him an e-mail. Here's what I sent:

-----------------
I was over talking to the owner of this car last week and took some more pictures of this notch. It is a '64, not a '62. I have several hi-res pictures of it at: http://www.neil.us/type3/64notch As you can see by these two pictures:
http://neil.us/type3/64notch/dscf0035.jpg
http://neil.us/type3/64notch/dscf0040.jpg
the VIN on this car is 0315879, which puts production in September of 1963. You can see the VIN chart here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/serialnumberst3.php
Also, it is not the original engine in it. The engine number, as seen in this picture: http://neil.us/type3/64notch/dscf0045.jpg
is T037353, which makes it an engine from Sept 1965 (refer to the same serial number chart above).

------------------

Anyway, that's what I know about the car. Very rusty in the rockers and pan. If it was a '62, I'd be tempted to save it, but as is, I don't think it's savable.

Yeah but for $400, I think its more than worth it in parts alone. You could probably get it for $300. You just dont see Ns ever. Ive seen more Es than Ns. This has most of the N stuff still on it. How would you like to be know as the guy that owns a real N? If I were closer, I would get it and make a run at gettin it going. So you have to many projects Neil? Dont want to save this one? Buy the way thanks for posting and getting those pics. My library now has actual pics of a N!

You notice the side marker on the N (the red one in the pics that says '62 - but is a '64)? Don't they look odd? Almost like the old Mercedes side markers. Kinda hard to see in the blurry pic, but they are vertical, and don't look like the typical tear drop horizontal shape.

I see what you mean. But is that a sidemarker or the remnants of an antena?

Jason scores. It's an antenna mount. And yes, I have too many projects already. Smile (just don't let my wife hear that)

Ah, it's clearer in that pic.

So, did N models not have side markers?

I didn't know that. The more I learn about the N models, the more I like them. Odd that they would strip down the upper level car.

Someone should save this car. I agree w/Jason, I don't think I ever seen pics of a real N model.
