|
|
I recently acquired a 61baja, and it has the heater control cable tubes, but somebody cut off the tube that the heater control knob assembly slides into. I need either a replacement section of this part of the tunnel, or I need to fabricate and thread a tube to replace the housing where it exits the tunnel. Does anybody know what thread pitch the tube is threaded for? Any help would be appreciated. I would also be interested in a piece cut from another tunnel to just weld back in. _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!

was it cut flush with the frame? I could go cut one out of a junkyard that is about a mile from my place, but it would have to wait till monday. No clue what the guy will want for it, but if someone closer doesnt have one, I can send it to ya for price +shipping

I can tell you that you will not find a threading die for that size, so unless you can cut threads with your lathe, you might as well forget trying to fabricate it!
Bret . . . you're awesome if you can get that section of the tunnel for Lingwendil!!!! _________________ Jesucristo es mi Seņor y Salvador! |

There is a procedure for this in the Bentley. I'll try to get a scan or a picture. It was apparently not uncommon to bang the threads up, and the procedure was replacement. _________________ Plate of shrimp |

I basically have been living there from 2-5 Thursdays and Fridays. It's not a vw exclusive yard, but I know he has one on a rotted car even I wouldn't touch. Just let me know for certain. A pic would be nice so I know how much to cut.

FWIW . . . mine was and I was unable to screw the control unit in, so I bought a metric thread file and it worked absolutely GREAT!!! http://www.amazon.com/Nicholson-Thread-Restoring-S...hread+file
You might need on of those files Lingwendil . . . if your replacement piece is not perfect. The threads are super fine and, as Panicman points out, easily damaged. Get the control unit to test with as you do the repair. _________________ Jesucristo es mi Seņor y Salvador! |

Ok, I dug out the Bentley procedure. Unfortunately, it is for instances where the conduit is still present, but the threads are damaged. If yours is cut flush, then first of all, goddam the bastard who did it. Then, move on.
You'll have to find a donor peice with clean threads and do some careful cutting and grafting.
Godspeed, and good luck. If you want me to scan the page from Bentley, I'll do it. Let me know. _________________ Plate of shrimp |

WOW! Not quite what I envisioned!
Just my opinion . . . some people should NOT work on cars!

You should run the new cables through the conduits to be sure they are free and open before you weld in the donor piece. _________________ Jesucristo es mi Seņor y Salvador! |
