There are some threads regarding this and it seems the only thing one can agree of is we don't agree...
Here is one of the threads: Intake manifold color
A pic from the forums of a 13,000 mile all stock 36hp from '57:
Personally I think the more darker semi gloss gray-ish is a more likely alternative than silver. On your intake perhaps the stock color is what is still remaining above the silvery "lump" on the upright single tube where the carb is attached? |

For future reference, the date codes/ chassis numbers can be found in the Techincal section: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php
Yours looks to be April 1960 and yes, it would have had the window trim. Nice car! |

Hello,
here are some pictures of my second model year 60.
Folding top, Kieselgrau L440.
Three finger front apron and small VIN tag:
Sun visor:
Very beautiful car, but there is a bit of a problem...
VIN is 3187XXX, would make it a very late model year 60.
My other MY 60 is an early october 59 and she has her original 4 finger front apron, oval rear apron and a leather like textured sun visor.
And she still is a complete car
I believe the MY60 is the first year which got the color code sticker in the front and the "paper" tubes for the defrost nozzles.
Cheers!

My picture has some very deceptive lighting; the single tube that the carb mounts to was finished in silver also. Here is another picture of a 1960 manifold (looking very silver) from a June 1960 issue of Hot Rod magazine in a feature article on hopping up a 36hp.

Hey ya'll, I've got a beautiful '61 and nearly all period correct, but the wiper switch for this beauty is not. Looks like the bellows type switch is not available as a manufactured part, so I may be looking at finding an original in the best condition I can get.
Does anyone know where a switch of this type might be found?

My new Oct 59 built 60 project...
Its a RHD UK car with factory ragtop, looks to be Mango or Beryl green under the yellow.
Its a real big project, but I intend to do a full restoration:
The ragtop material looks to be green... is this how it would have left the factory?

My newest purchase. An 1960 Ragtop Deluxe with original black California license plate
The seller is in the process of putting it back together after a fresh paint job inside and out. As far as the new paint job and new ragtop cover, everything else seems to be original. He has all the original light's and chrome trimming for the car and original curved locking handle for the ragtop. I will try and post more pictures of the inside when I get a chance. That's his sweet brown 55 oval window right next to it that he's had for 15 years.

Here is my 1960 India Red VW. Serial #2740XXX; I think it was built the last week of November 1959. It has a '74 1600 DP and a few upgrades. With the history I was given, it has less than 55,000 miles on the car and even less on the engine.

Well, after some searching I've landed my next stable mate. A black 1960 with true red. Only thing not original on car is the front passenger fender which was replaced after a small "bump-in." Interior and paint appear to be original as far as I can tell, and chassis, body, trans, and engine are all matching number 261XXXX which places me VERY early Sept. '59. Found her for what I believe is a good price in Montana and she will arrive in Mckinney this coming thursday. Very excited. I am making a seperate build/ restore thread that will house more pictures. I was stuck on 58-60 and found this one, couldn't pass it up. Only blemishes that I want to straighten out immediately are some dents to the rear fenders, want to keep the original metal so I will have to work them over some.

Question: the '60 36hp engines I am used to seeing don't have wiring tubes for the spark plug wires, they have plastic fittings that clip to the fan housing. Is November old enough of a 1960 build that it still retains the wire tube? When did the tube stop? _________________ Plate of shrimp |

According to progressive refinements, the spark leads conduit swapped over to the rubber holders at the beginning of May 1959. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Is that the remnants of the paint code sticker I see under the shelf for the brake fluid reservoir? If it is, you might get your answer there. _________________ Air does not freeze. Air does not boil.

Alright I was walking around the Kelley park swap meet and stumbled upon a billow wiper switch and I bought it. In all my excitement I didn't notice it was a screw terminal. Did they offer these in late 60 or something like that?

After a long time trying to find a decent OG rag I Finally found one.Seems pretty straight need Pans and lower rear quarter, heater channels good. Seems to be Jade Green from what I can see in a few spots. PO owner put 62 up tail lights. I plan on taking her down to bare metal and repaint it the OG color or slight variation to the jade green. This is my 2nd 60 but first rag and totally loving it.The 1200 was rebuilt by PO and runs great, its been fun driving it around town with my wife.Been looking for a good reasonable resto shop around where i live. Hopefully I can get more insight on my 60.

|
|
Bought this 1960 Euro last year and I have been doing research/collecting parts on the car until now. My research led me to where it was originally purchased at capitol Volkswagen sales in Boise Idaho. The car made its way to Utah and the front glass still had the 1972 Utah safety sticker on it. At some point the next year the car was moved to Arizona and I purchased it with the original 1973 license plate still on it. I purchased this car in August of 2014 in Phoenix Arizona from a Volkswagen enthusiast that had one too many projects.
The care was originally L440 Flint Gray with an interior that was gray cloth head liner and blue/gray seats and door panels. The car had the following features; window washer system; VDO electronic gas gauge; under the dash basket; roof rack; and aluminum kick panels. I will be trying to bring this car back to life with some original looks and some updates to the running gear and wheels.
Original samba pictures from when the previous owner was selling it.
Moving day; Picked up the car
Body off.
Pan restoration; first half almost done!
Both sides in and done!
I will post more as I continue to restore the car. Enjoy!
Built a body stand to get around the car and start the metal work. I think it looks pretty good for 2 hours of work.
Finished!
I will post more as the metal work is being done.

'61 Hydrate Green and Nepal Green e-brake handles. The Hydrate Green one has Hella stamped next to the VW symbol, Nepal one just has VW symbol.
