That's the idea. Spring is around the corner; when did you last replace your fuel lines?

I'm old enough to remember when beetles were all over the place and bought my first one new in 1967. I don't remember any negative press about the potential for fire. I don't think the critic Ralph Nader even pointed it out.
But I certainly agree it's something all ACVW owners must be aware of.

MY type 1 was there one time burried under 20 inches of snow. I enjoy all of the photos that Evertt and Jenn put there.

I believe you're mistaken about Nader. He hated VWs even more than Corvairs (if that's possible). He told the media, "Volkswagen Beetle is dangerous because of possible injury from windshield, weakness of seats, likelihood of doors opening in crash, dangerous gasoline tank location, possibility of steering column penetration in frontal crash, weak doors, poor handling qualities". At one point he tried to get Congress to force VW to recall all Type 2s because they are the most dangerous vehicle ever on US roads.

Yes I know Nader didn't like the vw. But I don't think he singled out the danger of fire from improper maintainence. I know he had issues with the location of the gas tank.
But I guess I'm just wondering why when for so many years and so many more VWs on the road engine compartment fires never seemed to come up.

There weren't all 30 some years old, or older, with a lot of deferred maintenance, because of cheap ass hippie poser owners, that didn't know squat, owning them back in the day. Back in the day, repair shops understood them better and owners understood the need of maintenance. Cars have become another appliance to most of the under 50 crowd. Toss it like a broken toaster, when the check engine light won't go out.
