After a brief (very brief due to excitement) search on the subject, I didn't find much. I'm wondering if anyone knows or has experienced a VW scene in Japan or if one even exists at all. Outside of Tokyo, I've not seen much. I received notification of assignment to Japan today and need to determine if I need to sell my rides or prepare to ship one over. Any info would be awesome. Heading to Misawa Air Base 31 August.

yes, there are definetly VW's in Japan. German Folks Klub even has a Japan chapter. A ton of high quality VW's went over to Japan from the US in the 80's and 90's. As you research, I'm sure you'll find more. They even have their own VW Magazine in Japan, Let's Play VW

I've seen a few air-cooled VWs in and around the Navy base in Yokosuka. I also saw this deluxe on the streets of Yokohama last year:

After doing some talking with guys I know over there, I'm told I have to live on base as a married man, and there are no garages in base housing. ANDY they get an a$$ load of snow. I have some big decisions to make. I don't want my Beetle or Bus sitting in the elements for four years.

I have shipped at least 8 bus rack kits to Japan. All over Japan.

Yup terrible weather. But my Beetle is British, and their weather totally sucks. So at least I already have the steering wheel on the wrong side. Very Happy But my Bus, not so much. I used to be stationed In your neck of the woods mark, Hurlburt Field.

I was Stationed in Misawa with the Navy Det.
I took my '67 over with me and had a good time. Not a lot of VW stufff going on up north where you will be but we had a blast making the trips down south in the bug for some of the bigger shows..

Nothing like a 12hr drive in a bug..But the roads are amazing Smile

Misawa is a lot of fun.

Awesome, thanks. It's good to hear from somebody that's been there. Were you there recently? What was the garage situation?

There's a guy on instagram I follow who is always taking pictures of some aircooled meets. I think they're usually in Kinokawa and Osaka.

I was last there in 2010.

If you are high enough rank or married and can live off base then you can find plenty of places with Garages, albeit small ones. If you get a chance to Live off base then I would definitely do it, makes the experience of being in Japan more real.

The place is amazing. Great food, good people, very little crime etc..
Get off base as much as possible, learn some of the language.. Your bug will draw a lot of attention.
