I have a friend working on a dune buggy and it's got a strange set up on the front brakes. Someone mentioned it could be Porsche 356, can someone verify? Thanks!

Those look like 356A backing plates. Drums are not in the picture. Confused

Yes they look like 356a brakes. In the last pic the wheel with drum attached is seen in the background. It looks like a 356 drum. Is it aluminum with a steel liner? Pics of the drums?

They are alloy.

That's good news, but he is probably better off putting stock brakes back on it, or converting to disc brakes and selling the drums and backing plates.

Thanks.

Can someone tell us what the L shape rod on the front beam is?

That looks like an early A or late PreA drum. No vent holes at the perimeter. For off road use brake bias should be to the rear. Too strong of front brakes will result in significant understeer when braking. Very Happy

Are you talking about the piece sticking out of the shock tower in between the trailing arms? If so it is the bump stop for the suspension. There is supposed to be a rubber end on it.

See part #1 on the diagram.

Here is a pic of a later B drum with vent holes for additional cooling of the brakes:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1627306
You will see several holes around the perimeter of the drum for added cooling. Later A drums have these holes. I have a fixture that bolts to the drums to add these holes to earlier drums that came without this feature.

edited for correction on L bracket question. It was posted low and looked like a signature line to me. Sorry Mic
