Been working past midnight every day this week. Fun.
Anyway, finally got a compression test (mostly) done. I couldn't get the tool onto #1 because of the carb, but I suppose it doesn't matter much...
#1 ? PSI
#2 95 PSI
#3 0 PSI
#4 95 PSI
I've been watching a few rebuild videos and my neighbor has rebuilt his type 4 (beautiful bus, runs like a top) and has the tools to loan.
Regarding Jake, I've learned quite a lot from this engine upgrade, and am spoiled by the power it produces - it's a blast to drive! I do not regret purchasing it and feel that all the minor (and now not-so-minor) problems I've had were the result of my ignorance with performance (non-stock) engines. I ask myself: if I were to ignore the boasts about the engine and service, would I be as happy as I am? Yes. I did not make this purchase for the brand-name, I made it for the quality and with that I am happy.
I've seen the phrase "turn-key" thrown around in ads by many engine builders, and it's always a lie. Yes, there are ready-to-run engines, but that doesn't mean the oil system, fuel system, ignition system, engine mounts, carb clearances, breather system, etc are OK. There's NO WAY all I have to do is buy an engine and "turn a key". Jake went very far in getting the engine as close as possible to that point, but there's still QUITE A LOT of knowledge needed before that key can turn. I missed part of that education and ignored warning signs that I didn't recognize, and now I'm going to pay the price.
Here's my lesson, and it's been helpful for me after the first few months of ownership: it's MY engine. It has a great pedigree, and I've had radically less issues with it than friends who have performance T1s, but what was done to it since I bought it was done by me - for better and for worse.
Going forward, I will be rebuilding my engine. I hope Jake will be OK with that, but I trust that he wont be - but I'm not that concerned because, well, it's MY engine. _________________ VW-181 shirts and stickers.
