I got away from the stock rim. I run the stock chrome type wheels made by Mangels. ...which I think are now made by Eagle.....and are an EMPI wheel now.
The ones I have had are 15" x 5.5" and I think were set up for type 3 offset which should be the same as 411/412. I will measure the ET of mine in the next day or so.
But I run 205 60-15s with mine and have since I bought them. Perfect for the type 4. Within a few mm of the same outer tire diameter so the speedo runs accurately, plenty of brake and fender clearance all around.....and lowers the car by about an inch and handles so m7cu better because of the lower profile side wall and most of an inch wider tread contact.

I have been looking just was not sure of the size rim that would fit. She is at the paint shop now. I wanted to put new rims on it to dress it up. |

As a note.....and KTPhil brought this up and he is correct....it took me a minute to figure what he was getting at......it was staring me in the face and I missed his point ...I must be getting old!
The 205/60-15 will NOT lower your ride height. It is less than 1% difference...way less than 1% difference in circumference.....than the circumference of the stock 185/85 tire.
Its the same height as the stock tire....but it handles way better because it has a 25mm lower sidewall and 20mm greater tread width and quite a bit stiffer sidewall.
Apologies...Ray |

Yes, I have said before that I found it puzzling that this was Volkswagen's premium aircooled vehicle. This was an expensive car, the Passat of it's day and they tossed on the usual Type 1, 3 steel wheel and chrome hub cap. Why not dress the car up? I know Volkswagen was still stuck in that mentality that everything was extra, but why not include the premium wheels, radio etc? |
Yeah!.....the paperwork from delivery on my 412....which was at a dealer in Frankfurt.....notes that the only extra option the original owner ordered was a Blaupunkt Wolfsburg III am/shortwave. I still have it as well as the saphire radio that came out of the dash at the dealer.
I find it hard to believe that either of those radios were luxury for 1973. Ray |
