I have a 30 PICT 3 that has lost the "freeze plug" at the venturi access. It's running now with a wad of tin foil jammed in it because it runs like crap with the plug open. The parts store have 1/2 inch plugs but they are too big, I'm guessing the plug is 12mm. Anybody know where I can get a new plug?

Dimes work, too. It's not really a freeze plug, it's for backfires. If you have enough water in your carburetor to freeze, you have serious issues.

A dime not a nickel.

How about a small engine repair shop that does a lot of carb work?

Part number 113129119A, but nobody seems to have them anymore. Your best bet is to pull one from a junk carb or go with the epoxied-in dime trick.

You can cover the hole with anything that is airtight and won't get sucked into the carb. I cut/punch a circle out of a soup can lid ... make it fit tight ... then make the circle slightly concave by hitting the center with a ball peen hammer. Drive it into the carb carefully with a drift so it sits all the way down in the opening then seal it up with whatever sealant you have handy.

The description makes it sound like an involved process, but it really takes about 5 minutes. I tried a dime the last time I needed to do this and it was a little too large to fit the hole.

I have used a rubber stopper from Ace Hardware to seal this hole in the past, but I like the dime idea.

My research has shown that it doesn't matter whether Mercury or Roosevelt dime, or which side faces out. Mercury dimes and pre-1965 Roosevelts are made of silver, 1965 and later or clad sandwich-type. And when you sell the VW be sure to charge an extra 10 cents to cover that.

Wouldn't the silver Mercury dime triple the value of a fat chick Laughing

I don't think its for backfires...

I believe its there for the drillings that need to be made when the carb is first cast.

Then, after the drillings are made, they plug it with that plate.

Other simpler drillings are plugged with a small metal bb, or a plug.

However, these can blow out DUE to a back fire.

You can fix it with a dime, and some JB weld.

Yes, that is correct. Here's part of a German Technical Bulletin (I put in the translations thanks to one of the online translator programs)

The plug from NAPA wouldn't work because the hole isn't deep enough for a cup plug, it needs to be the flat type with a bowed center.
