When removing the engine, where would be the best place to put the jack and the jack stands in the rear? I did a search but they all seem to differ. _________________ -Jared

I put the jack stands under the torsion tube so that they aren't in the way when you're trying to get the motor out. |

i've never understood why people want to get the car up so high to get the engine out.
i've always dropped the engine to the floor then raised the car/bus with a large trolley jack to slide the engine out and then let the vehicle back down on it's wheels again.
but that's just me, so do whatever ya like guys. |

Same here.
I take the engine out first, and let it sit on a flat mdf panel on the garage floor (I can grab the panel and use it as a skid with the engine on it).
Then I jack up the car (I put a wooden block on the jack and then place it underneath the Y section of the trans carrier arms so I can raise the rear as much as possible with the jack... but I do make sure that no floorpan or other vulnerable parts are touched by the wood or jack, since the weight of the car will rest on the wooden block when I start jacking). That will give me enough clearance to slide the engine from under the car's rear end.
And then I support the car with long jack stands (underneath the torsion tube) for more safety.
Finally I pull the mdf sheet with the engine on it from underneath the rear of the car ... job done. _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank

Isn't the engine in the way for the trolley jack? I mean there are only a few areas where you can lift the car without bending or damaging things.
I jacked my car up really high and placed in on jack stands, made it very easy to get to the bolts to drop the motor. _________________ ----------------------

i go in from the side in front of the rear wheels and lift from the middle in front of the tranny.
and i lift the car from the same place to take the bottom engine to bell housing nuts off. without securing it with axle stands...................
yes, i have proper big trolley jacks. |

Place the jackstands under the rear torsion tubes at the 'inner side' -
Don't jack up or support the car at the outer ends of the torsion tubes (at the spring plates), as it can screw up the rubber bushings.

I just use one of these
to drop the engine onto one of these...
- with the exhaust/heater boxes resting on the carpeted sections.

that's pretty much what i use as well so thanks for the fine illustrations even if they won't convince many to do it the easy way. |

I have a dolly like that, thanks. I'll have to try the lowering it to the floor then raising the car trick. _________________ -Jared

I would always just back the rear wheels up on 2 wooden blocks each approx 5 " high that I made for this purpose. This gets the right height for my trolley jack and I don't have to jack the body up and down each time I remove and replace the engine. |

Since I have a motorcycle I already had the jack, using it, I pulled the engine from the vert, replaced the donuts on the oil cooler and put it in the Ghia in 3 hours by myself without having to lift anything by hand. But then I'm an old guy with bad shoulders and knees. _________________ Chuck in Socal

i can understand using the motorsickle jack if you already have one but it's a mystery why people buy one instead of a good 2 ton trolley jack and then have the car fall down while using a crappy scissor jack from wallmart or suchlike. |

I just pulled an engine a couple of weeks ago. How are you getting to the two lower studs that connect the engine to the transmission without jacking the car up first? _________________ ----------------------

Guilty as charged I did miss your post, I just didn't see it, but does that give you any reason to act like a horse's ass? _________________ ----------------------
