I have a lowlight that was build on Sept 26 1956. I'm looking at this site:
http://www.type-14.com/chassis.htm
It seems that he has the model year switch in August of 59. Except the vin numbers page here on the samba
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdatingkg.php
He has the start of the model year as August of 56.
So if type-14.com is right, then I have a 56, if thesamba.com is right then I have a 57. Oy! _________________ - Chris

It will always be something of a contentious issue but most Ghia experts will tell you the first real Ghia "model year" in the sense of consolidated specification changes at the beginning of the year rather than drip-fed changes through out the year...1965.
This is Richard Troy's take on it...and you will also find Dave Ruby is of the same opinion...which is good enough for me.

I'm delighted to know that my Ghia is a 1960 model, being built according to the birth certificate on the 30th of September 1960.
Looking at progressive refinements, it says that the general VW model year 1961 began on the 1st of October 1960 with chassis number 3,335,848.
Yet so many KG and other parts people say that 1st August '60 was the model year changeover. 8/60 still seems to be important for interior panel color changes according to my parts manual.
I guess this has changed into more of a Type 1 question... Model year 1961 starts August 1960 or October 1960? _________________ 1962 1/2 Australian Made Beetle

I need to get over myself and start claiming mine as a 1961, even though the title states 1962. It was built in late '61, but I feel like I'd also be "that guy" if I called it a '61. |
