Good morning, Guten Morgan, Moin

I have been member for awhile and made a few posts, I felt it was about time I introduce myself and our new family member. I am member of RennList and I know the importance of photos, so they will be below. The community is fantastic, I appreciate all the help and insight. Without Samba and RennList, ownership of my two air-cooled auto would be far less enjoyable.

We purchased a 1970 Bay last fall having looked for a couple years. It was on local Craiglist and could not resist. It was VERY solid and had 1600 with about 4k miles. I have lots of stories of what I have already done.

We love VW and Porsche. Also like had Audi. Der Bus (Collector License Plate) will primarily be used for tailgating in the near future. We intend to get it all functioning well and it will be green and white for a few years. Eventually I will return it to Montana Red and spray a green vinyl wrap during the football season. I am a cabinet maker and intend to customize the interior with new maple and maybe even cherry cabinets.

Summary: We cleaned it up, got it running nicely, pulled 100's of feet of unused wires from POs. I stopped rust, welded in new sheetmetal got headlights to work and started a list of wants/needs. While doing that I sanded it down, blasted some of the areas for minor repairs. I am in ND and although I have heated garage, I am not setup well for indoor painting. So it sits in storage under a fresh coat of sealer.

Now for pics.

I will also make a thread of our Journey.

Purchased this 1968 Deluxe/Westfalia bus to complete some critical missing pieces. I needed partial wiring harness, turn signal switch, the Jalousie windows etc. It is in very very rough shape but nearly original. After saving our bus, I dreamed up crazy idea to make it the tailgating trailer so our bus can be setup more for general use/camping.

Edit - 01Mar2015 - the m-code is for a 9 pass microbus, not a Deluxe. Sad I think it has some deluxe parts such as exterior trim and a plastic tire cover for inside.

Welcome! I love the original red that your 70' was. Nice choice to bring it back to that color.

I have to say, that parts bus has to be one of the rustiest I've seen! Shocked

I hope you continue to update your thread.

Thanks for welcome.

The sliding door had not been opened since 1992. When I tried, it came off and fell to ground. The strap around it in picture is for the 300 mile trek home. The bus spent its life in MN and was used year round. It even had winter tires on the back. The salt in MN can be devastating. The 70 spent most of life in Oregon. Came to ND in 2006 and sat. Now it will be summer and fall only in ND and MN.

I will start thread of my adventures thus far, soon.

Thanks. It's been fun already. I miss her but soon enough she will be out and driving again.

I believe it is L30H Montana Red. They appear to be almost the same color. It will be the color again one day. after I finish repairs and interior. Then it will be glass out repaint to Red/Cloud White.

Been doing research on my camper while in storage. I couldn't wait anymore and since it was above 20F, I went out to the storage to capture the M-plate.

I now have the facts.

Destination: Honolulu - interesting.

7 Seater microbus, eventually with Riviera Penthouse and Westfalia interior. I have no idea yet when these happened.

From Decoder:
Model -Type 2 (T2) mod. 221(1) :
- Microbus
- 7 seater (arrangement 2-2-3)
- Sliding door right
- LHD
Planned production date - Friday, 03 April 1970
Type of engine - Type 1 (B5) - 1584cc, 35 kW (47 bhp DIN)
Type of transmission - Manual 4-speed gearbox
Paint color
Color upper part : L581 - Cloud White
Color lower part : L30H - Montana Red
Interior Color
40 - Black Leatherette

For the love of all that is holy, please don't chop up a '68 deluxe. Please. You can get far better results with the new fiberglass trailers that are made to look like exactly what you're going after. It will weigh sooo much less and be alot easier on your camper. It would break my heart to see a deluxe gown down in bits.

But on the other note, I dig the camper.

Was not planning on chopping originally. I needed some good parts to complete mine. I have learned it is not a deluxe or a weekender as I thought. The M-code identifies it as a 9 pass microbus. someone added the Westfalia interior but there are some deluxe parts with it like trim etc. There are some parts I will make available to others here on Samba that I think were part of the original 9 Pass config. vents etc.

The body and frame a so very rusty, I had difficulty strapping down. I intended to build a new frame because the Minnesota salt ate up much of the bottom of this poor bus. If it can be saved, I am open to that as well.

That Minnesota bus is toast. It's time for it to be an organ donor.

Even worse, 9 seaters are my soft spot Crying or Very sad
But yea, if it's too far salted, make sure you get some good use out of the parts. And if you do cut 'er up; I'm going to PM you some parts I would really like to buy off of you.

Because I failed miserbly with applying the urethane sealer, I get to sand it all again before applying sealer, base coat and clear coat. I am considering paying someone this time,
