PostPosted: Sun Mar 01, 2015 2:23 pm    Post subject: Soliciting Advice - Pilot Shaft - Throw Out Bearing Issues Reply with quote

Hello All,

I recently purchased a 1962 Standard Bus that has been modified. Engine is a 1600 dual port, dual weber carbs. For the tranny, I was told it was a freeway flyer but it won't go into gear. The price of the bus was discounted because of the tranny issue.

So I dropped the engine and low and behold the throw out bearing was completely destroyed. The input shaft wobbles (see video). I am thinking the person who put it together used a type 1 transmission with a longer input shaft but I don't know. What could have caused this situation? The bus build is relatively new (500 miles on this set up).

I am thinking I will need to take off the bell housing and take a peek inside the tranny. There could be a lot more damage...what would you guys do to re mediate this situation? I am not very mechanical, I get do basic stuff but trannys are out of my league. I am thinking I should just buy a new tranny for a type 2 and sell this one.

Cheers and thanks for your insight...

Trans looks fine. Looks like someone used the wrong combination of pressure plate and TO bearing. Any pics of the pressure plate?

You should be able to get the early style PP and TO bearing, and get back on the road.

Take a look at the video I posted on you tube (there is a link) in my OP. I am concerned about the wobble with the pilot shaft.

The wobble is normal. It should pivot a certain amount if you try to move it around . What these guys are saying is if you have a photo of the rest of your clutch assembly they could eliminate a possible mismatch.I have a dual port engine in my '66 westy with the earlier clutch assembly. Different than yours.

Don't worry about the wobble, unless the engine is installed there's nothing supporting the end of the shaft, that's what the bearing in the gland nut is for. As long as you can't move it in and out it's fine.
X3 on a pic of your pressure plate, something odd caused that throwout bearing to blow up.

If you need a trans, might I recommend Gary here in Washington. An absolute master craftsman.

I was out of town but back, so here are pictures of the pressure plate. What do you think?

Looks like you currently have the late style PP and TOB, with an early trans.

Looks like you had the bad t/o bearing-clutch combo.

See this thread:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=148307

A new matching pressure plate/throw-out bearing should fix it.
