Hey guys, I am new to the VW world and I am having trouble IDing the carb on my motor.

I am posting some pics. If I can ID it, I want to get a new one or a rebuild kit. Every time I turn the bug off it wants to keep running and seems to suck gas like no other. I am not sure if it is stuck or what but it seems to have a leak as you can see from all the gunk.

Let me know if you can help.

It looks like a Weber progressive carb. I can see a 27, and the first barrel is maybe 25 - can't read it? That'd be the venturi sizes.

It is a weber progressive, but they came in many different flavors. See if you can find any numbers stamped in the base of the carb (where the carb mounts to the manifold).

Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

Now, after doing some reading (mostly that the carb is a PITA) I think I want to change carbs.

I got the motor off an old neighbor so I don't know much about it besides it is a 1835 rebuild. I don't recall him saying anything else about performance parts.

With this info, can anyone suggest another "user friendly" carb for me?

Usually it's best to match the carb with the distributor.

Well, here's the likely feedback you will get:

1) Progressive carbs can be difficult to setup on a bug but when they run good they run good

2) Any centermounted carburettor on a bug requires heat supplied to it to help it atomise the fuel and keep it atomised in the long intake manifold

3) Dual carburettors are often used, placed nearer the heads and used to shorten the manifold and they generally flow better meaning they support higher revving engines

Personally, I think you should do a bit of research - the 1835 motor is very popular and there's got to be someone on here who can give you first hand experience and advice on their setup. You might just need to tune your carb, it sounds like it's rich.

I'd suggest you repost a new question titled something like :

Weber Progressive 32/36 on 1835 tuning help needed

or similar and then focus in on the run-on/dieseling and the fuel consumption.
