This past summer I bought a 71 and I'm currently working on rebuilding the motor, fixing some rust and wiring and PO's questionable decisions. Its been pretty slow since I'm trying to do it without help with money and such but I'm trying to finish it by May when I turn 16. This is the first car I've really done any work on so its all just been learning pretty much. I'm pretty bad at remembering to take pictures but ill do my best.

most of the rust is up front

Save your scalp and turn those license plate screws around the other way.

71's are a great year for Bay Windows! Upright motor, Disc Brakes, still a low light! I'm currently doing a 71 Deluxe Sunroof and can't wait to get out and drive it! Good Luck with your project!!!

You're gonna need to replace that bug exhaust with a proper bus exhaust.

I have a tiny scar in my hairline from those screws. I solved it by always wearing a hat. lol.

Nice bus and a great start! I love the colors and interior.

Yeah I picked up a bed a couple weeks ago but i think I'm going to paint the floors first, especially after I deal with that rust in the front. I've seen some people on here do some kind of spray on rubber stuff like 3m undercoating or something similar over some por 15 so I think I might do something like that

I'd work on the engine first. But that's just me. As long as you've got good compression, get a good carb and dizzy, then it won't take much to get it running. With a running engine first, you'll have a "rolling resto", meaning you can fix it up as you drive it. I've found that helps tons with the motivation to keep a project going. So many people start fixing up their buses and spending time and/or money on unnecessary things then run out of funds and motivation.
71 deluxes are the best by the way!

I've actually already got the motor out and stripped down and I have most of the parts to rebuild it. I'm just waiting on a new oil pump puller to finish tearing it down. I didn't think to loosen the case bolts first and it just bent the puller. Also last night I ordered a dakota digital CHT gauge and a vdo oil pressure, already have oil temp so I'm going to be putting those in sometime soon.

A little simple green and some scotch bright pads for that engine compartment. Give that new motor a nice nest to live in.

Its been slow but I dropped off my case to have it align bored, still need to rebuild the carb so maybe one more paycheck before I've got the motor built and installed, still need to order a couple things.
I've heard that CHT sender wires shouldn't be placed within a foot of a wire carrying a current and if thats the case I have no idea how to route it where it will be long enough so any ideas on that would be great

Got the engine bay cleaned up

Trannys out so I can replace shift rod bushings and coupler. Theres quite a bit of forward backward play in the hockey stick I don't know how much play can happen before its not good but I did pick up a bushing/seal kit for it
so yeah I just need to put the trans back in , finish wiring up the new guages and build a motor for it then I should be good to go
