Got another Klassicfab piece in place ready to go in. I'm going to have to slow down now and make sure I have the sequence right. I think I have to rebuild the back before I can weld the front together since the heater channel might have to go in and out a few times before everything is ready to weld together.

Where am I going to find some of this?

The inside diameter is 1 1/4 inches. Has anyone restored a car with this defrost vent tubing before?

Never mind.

These two pictures are to reassure me that I got the front clip right. Maybe tonite I will bolt on the front fenders and see how they line up. I'm betting it'll be good. If not I will try not to get any tears on the bare metal, I hear they are pretty salty.

Here is where I cut all the rusty metal away without taking good pictures first.

Lucky I had the other side to work from as well as the '58 parts car. Unfortunately the '58 is quite a bit different in this area which meant a lot of guesswork and thinking to slow things down.

Since I don't have much in the way of metal shaping skills and the structure below the rear seat support mount is a compound curve, I had to do it in a couple of steps. Probably 1.5 hours to shape this tiny triangle of metal. I cut a piece of cardboard to fit and transferred that to sheet metal and began shaping it with my little hammer and dolly. Once I had one curve shaped approximately, I tack welded it in place and worked on the other curve. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out but if I had someone in the office keeping track of my time I'd be in trouble.

The third and final piece for this repair. Another 2 hours of careful measuring, cutting and grinding to get it just right. I have to think carefully now if I want to weld it in at this point, I don't want to have to cut anything apart if I get the sequence wrong. I think I will go back to the front of the car and mess around there for a while while I think of what to do next out back.

Thanks guys. I have never done bodywork before so it's a steep learning curve. I hope to make all my mistakes on parts of the car you can't see so by the time I'm working on stuff you can see, I at least know a little bit what I am doing.

Right now I am jonesing after a shot bag and anvil.

Does anyone know where to get a good reproduction of the battery tray for 58 and later cars?

Seems all that's out there these days are owner-owned replacement panels of the generic quality. I had searched for one a few years back for a '66 I used to have and that's all I could find. Couldn't find any new production pieces listed, except for half pans, etc. Might be able to custom order from Klassic Fab, but that would probably be based on earlier production models…which might still work for your '58.

It's been a while since I posted anything. Mostly I've been welding and grinding, not fun jobs but necessary.

Tonight I started work on the pan. As I need the garage for my '59 Canadian custom sunroof and my 1970 Triumph TR6, the project cars will have to go into storage for the summer. I decided to POR15 the pan and weld the various holes people drilled over the years closed and fix the dents. One of the little issues with standard model cars is that the seats sit right on the pan with no rails. This creates a number of problems. The first is that the lower seat frame tubes become bowed out as the drivers weight shifts back and forth during acceleration and braking. This turns the seats into rocking chairs, disconcerting to the occupants. The other is that the pans become stretched where the seat frames rest and form channels under them. This also contributes to the rocking chair effect. The only way to address this is to shrink the metal back into flatness. With this in mind I got out my little plumbing torch and a bucket of water and a small towel. Working from the ends of the troughs, I heated the metal red hot and quenched it with the wet towel. After a second or two of quenching I got out my hammer and dolly and began pounding things flat. The result is not perfect but close enough for government work.

A beautiful sunny day here in Winnipeg, perfect for scraping and painting. After welding some holes shut and flattening some dents I spent a couple of hours scraping carpet glue and rust scale off the pan half. POR 15 is amazing stuff, does a beautiful job and dries hard in a day. Remember to wear gloves tho because nothing seems to take it off skin except for time.

Probably too late but Wolfsburg west has a battery replacement section that matches perfectly. Cheaper than the one your looking at too. I used one.

Looks pretty good Don. Nice and square.
Are the doors fitting back on good with even gaps?
