I see it for the first time... id like to know if anyone can tell me more about it!

Searching the net i found that is from a porsche 356 or oval split beetle but im not shure...

So is it from porsche 356?

I dont know if its a NOS or aftermarket either?

Thank you in advance!

That is not an original 356 tach. VW beetles did not have factory tachs. I don't know what it is from.

It is not likely that this is from any VW or Porsche 356 vehicles. First, it is a 12 volt electrical tach. Almost all Porsche 356 to 1965 were 6 volt, and most all Porsche 356 to 1964 used a mechanical tach, not an electrical tach. Early VW beetles were also 6 volt to 1966, and never had any provisions for a tach at all.
Porsche 356 tach faces look entirely different, and have model-specific redline markings for maximum RPM. The tach you have, has no redline markings, so is probably for some other application or an aftermarket product. With a top RPM rating of 8000 RPM, I doubt it was ever intended for VW applications.

I didn't notice it when I first looked at your pictures, but after reviewing the posting thread that Jack supplied above (Thanks Jack!), it appears that your tach has a mounting ring with tab supplied with it that allows it to be mounted under or above the dashboard. In that case, I would guess that yours is an aftermarket non-model specific tach. If you don't get the answers you want on these forums, you could try contacting one of the two preeminent west coast VDO repair shops for their opinion.

If you want to see a Porsche 356 tach., check out my Samba ad for a C tach. This one has a mechanical drive not like the late C which had an electric drive.

Actually, Tom, your tach would not be "correct" for any 356, although it is 356 based. Close inspection reveals that the tach would originally have been used for a '64 C, or a '62/'63 super (red lines between 50 and 55 rpms). Date stamps on the back could reveal the time frame. The white/ivory needle with a turned aluminum center bullet has been replaced with a green needle and a black bullet. It also can be seen that the smaller chrome ring on the face, partially surrounded by the green and red lines, has been painted black in an attempt to make it look more appropriate for PreA. Smile

Ad title:

This is just a person on eBay who puts every spam word possible in the title so more people find it when searching.

This happens frequently on eBay.
Sometimes here too.

Interesting. My tach in my '64 C coupe has the green zone from 2500-5000 RPM and the red zone from 5000-5500 RPM. Tom's tach looks more like my "60 1600 S tach with the green zone from 3000-5000 RPM and the red from 5000-5500 RPM. I know the '60 tach is original to the car. I'll have to check my driver's manual for the C when I get home to read what it has about the tach readings. I'll also check the needles but I believe them to be stock/correct.
Thanks, Jack--
Jon

Jack: I agree, but let me disagree. You say "Tom, your tach would not be "correct" for any 356, although it is 356 based"

My tach. is a 356 based one and was in my Pre-A when I bought it. It works fine as a rev counter and would be correct for any 356 owner who needs a working 356 tach. for not a lot of money. The new owner could use it as is (but don't go to a concours or the judge will puke) or send it to one of the speedo shops to correct all the issues you have noted.
My Pre-A now has both an original '55 mechanical tach (on the shelf) and s C electric tach because the engine I'm driving with is a twin-plug, full oil flow filter setup. With a that oil filter you have to use an electric tach.

Firefighter 035, if you wish to sell your tach, a friend of mine with a hot rod VW wants a tach to match his VW speedo. If you want to sell, will yours fit in the round hole (for a clock?) in the VW dash? KTF
