Ok I may be confused as to where you're at in putting everything back. The pushrods will just slide in through the tubes and be loose. Then you will put the rocker arms on. One side will be on the push rod and one will ride on the valve. Once you adjust the valve lash the push rods will tighten up but still wiggle and spin.

Now if you're talking pushrod "tubes" I'm not as well versed on those. Are they adjustable, or have springs? Did you put the gaskets in the seats where they sit?

The pushrod tubes are those flexy things that go over the pushrods. They’re made so that they’re approx. ˝ cm longer than needed, and then they compress as the engine head is installed and torqued down. I think a slight wiggle after installation may be OK, although I haven’t performed any such tests on mine in my ’64 Ghia, because any wiggling by me will reduce their sealing ability and lead to oil leakage.

UNLIKELY: If yours are REALLY loose, although I’m not sure exactly what that means, then you could either (1) back out (or remove) the engine head and stretch out the tubes a bit or (2) remove the head, install nice new tubes, and proceed. Either way, you will likely experience at least a little oil leakage eventually: ACVWs like to mark their territory.

Again, these things were designed to flex a significant amount before installation and may flex a tiny amount afterward. I suspect that you’re in good shape and can just proceed. Hopefully, another Sambanista with more experience than me will add their 2˘.

Yes, but you have to stretch them (gently) BEFORE you put the head on. If these are loose, you will have a horrible oil leak.

May also be a good idea to replace the push tube/rod seals, if you haven't already done so.

not only normal but necessary. You stretch them out, put in place and torque the head down to compress tubes.

I haven't ever heard of stretching them before use myself. If they are new they should fit. It may be that they are for a 36 horse and not a 1200-1600.

So even a new push rod tube you have to stretch? I would think they would come stretched...

See the ends? they are tight together. I always pull them out (like an accordion) a little on each side ... now they have space to compress.
Thats how someone taught me a long time ago.

Ok. The push rod tubes were short! There were for the 36hp? I think system and mine was longer. They were willing to switch them which is great. The motor is back in and after one wiring error when putting back together it is now running!!! In fact I was showing it off on Poker night and started for each person as they showed up. Started every time. No hiccups, no issues... Now I need a new battery and tires... Tires are huge. Anyone have an extra set they want to get rid of? I am willing to buy a new set once I save for a bit but I am dying to get her on the road. I will post up a video when I have a few.

Oh and a picked up a 66 body with a near perfect front right quarter panel!!! So I am going to cut that out in the near future. the rest of the car is up for grabs if anyone sees anything they need. I would like to get my money back but the parts will go cheap. Again I will post pics later. It also came with I would guess 72 doors, door windows, 72 roof, and trunk. And I have an early 70s Front right quarter panel I was going to use if I couldn't find the right one. Let me know if you are interested.

What part of Washington are you in? I have a set of chrome stock wheels w/ tires I'm ready to sell - $150 for the set. I'd be interested in trading parts if you want to get rid of your extras.

That was some good fun towing that old Ghia body to your plaza. Thanks for the photos. Now we need a video of the motor running and some tires on that green booger then she'll be drivin'!

You still need to name her....

The Ghia or "THE" Ghia. Not sure that I could name mine but I sure do like turning up the radio in the basement and making it rain dollar bills on her. Rolling Eyes

No I'm not one for naming my cars either, I wouldn't be so presumtious to refer to it as THE Ghia...The Ghia will do. Also had a 15 window Bus and we called it "The Bus" Wink
