I pulled the tank with engine in, not easy but doable. The sender was not working, bad ground. Pulled sender and found nothing wrong just would not send, Found this link on samba
http://www.hallvw.clara.net/fuelsend.htm
Now it works

on the 72, tanking the case off the sender and cleaning the two hair thin wires off and making the float slide easily is crucial to making to work properly and smoothly.

the hellas are about 65 bucks, the mirrors are around 75 each. about 225 worth of upgrades after shipping give or take. well worth it and best upgrades i have done yet.

only upgrade i would think is even more important would be seatbelts, and if you can find a 85-90 VW jetta or golf, those seat belts drop right in (including the female reciever end) and work great. either get a bracket to stand the retractable part in upright, or remove the level sensing ball that locks the belt in if the assembly is not verticle (IE if its horizontal instead of vertical. doing this does not alter the locking effect though if you pull on them fast aka sudden stops, so still a safe belt to have. the brackets are cheap though, like 5 bucks a pair. just a simple THINK L shaped bracket to bolt the belt to and then bolt to the seat base area.

i have a set in my bus and can take pictures if your curious. retractable seat belts are a HUGE modern day convenience that i would HIGHLY recommend. if you do it right, you should be able to get all the parts for 50 bucks or less, compared to cheap and bad quality after market ones that are made to do the same thing for nearly 250 a pair and they are cheap, like i said. the VW original parts are the way to go. Smile

Not really, I usually put them on with the bump facing the manifolds.

And another 2 to get the tools to where you can hold them. My heater won't keep up. Staying inside next to the space heater working on wiring diagrams and shopping lists until the weather breaks.

As you have noticed I reused the original fill hose, I checked it very close and it was as pliable as any new hose I have seen, no cracks or any signs of age.

As i was removing tank I broke the straps, I cleaned them up and then welded them back together, when I do a full restore I will locate and replace them for now this will have to do.

I ordered several of these hoses and none of them were close to original, I had to cut this one down to fit.

I had pic of the inside of tank unfortunately I lost my phone with the pics at a salvage yard. I did not do the por-15 to the inside of tank when I cleaned it their was only about a handful of rust in it. Now that it is in, gauge works fine and lines are sealed and no leaks.

Also put in a gasket to body seal in to help keep road dirt and dust from entering the tank area.

This is my daughter helping to install tank.

I found these intakes and installed them as you can see they are a bit taller I am hoping it will help.

These are the pics of my brakes as I have on it now instead of the 72 style that I could not find all the parts needed.

Thanks to these two samba members I was able to find a good set of heat exchangers, [email protected],

The tin on the exchangers is very easy to come apart so I will repair the old ones and use asbestos free insulation for future bus owners.

Above is a set of Dansk that I found locally, as you can see the differance in the one in the next pic is an original, I live in Mi. so I need all the heat I can get. I would say as others have said before me the Dansk are good for fair weather areas where the temp would not dip into the negative numbers. I will be putting these up for sale.

This is my alt bracket to heat exchanger the original owner had welded it to the exchanger, I cut it off and need to make the repair. I used a washer and cut it down to fit then welded it together.

I have also removed the side door the arm was broken and I had a hole in the track. This is where I lost my phone at the salvage yard looking for these parts

Still having problems with the carbs. I have read and reread the posts on tuning them, seem like now I am having possible a plug or firing problem.
I pull the plug wire from 1 and 2 and engines rpm only slightly drops, One wire at a time, when pull 3 or 4 engine drops very noticeable. So anyone, do you think I still need to tune carbs?

Glance through my 72 bus thread in my signature line, we pulled the firewall and replaced that nipples elbow, and it's still available new. I posted pics and a part number.

Edit, this post. Ignore my fuel sender hack. .... Embarassed

I have the number but was unable to find it. What parts store did you find it at, When I pull everything for the restore I would like to put the right one on. These are hard to find maybe you should buy a few and help other owners out and sell them. I'll buy the first one...

Look in Ratwells' pages for tune up instructions for the PDSIT's. So you know, the exhaust and intake manifolds you put on are from a later year, tho they will work fine.
http://www.ratwell.com/
Also, the parking brake spreader bar on the rear brakes is different on later years, shorter, so be sure to get '73 up brake shoes. I'd also recommend getting a Pertronix unit. Good work reviving the Bus.

Yes the one for the left is a later year and with smog pipe.
I received this one first so I put it on the other set is exactly the same as the ones I took off. As for the brakes I believe they are for a 73.
I have a pointless dist, I have studied Ratwells and others for tuning these carbs and still can not get them right. Maybe something else is wrong, I have new plugs, wires, cap, adjusted the rockers three times, rebuilt the carbs and still I can not get it to run well enough the drive on the road. New fuel pump filters lines and using a tank full of premium fuel.
I am hoping I can get someone local that can give me a hand with this, Sure would like to drive it on the road for a weekend before summer is over..
