I want to take the transmission out of my 71 to clean it up and replace shifter bushings and stuff. are the two bolts at the front the only thing that hold the transmission in place when the motor is out? Ive checked the bentley and rob and daves writeup but i still dont quite understand.

Aside from the CV joints, shifter linkage, clutch cable, ground strap and backup light wires yes, 2 bolts on the front mount is all there is. I hope it's currently supported in a level position, if it drops the shifter gets FUBAR'd.

Would something be broken or just need to be readjusted? I was already planning on replacing the shifter, bushings and shift coupler so I'll have to adjust that anway

Potentially bent hockey stick, bent shift rod and or coupler, cracked nose cone. That's all I can think of, but I'm sure Busdaddy can add to the list when he wakes up later this morning. G'night...

The old shift coupler on the right is the result of the transmission hanging on it.

Early 68-72 shift rods where straight. They can be bent from the tranmission hanging on them.

I've always been a great believer in pulling and installing the drive train as a package.
