|
|
I have a 64 Beetle, 40HP with 28-1 PICT carb. I broke the terminal blade off the ceramic choke and was wondering if anyone has had success repairing/soldering theirs back on? If I have to replace the choke, do I need the ceramic type or can I get a 6V metal housing choke? Not sure of the difference. My choke is held in by a round flat metal part with three holes for mounting screws. Thanks for responding. |

I've soldered many a weird parts, so I'd say give it a try.
Amazing what you can do once you get rid of the "I'll never be able to do that" mindset. |

the ceramic chokes are smaller diameter than the metal. try and solder it. _________________ Rick

You have a 28PICT-1 carb bottom, but is the top 28PICT-1 style?
The PICT and PICT-1 carb tops can be interchanged. But the choke elements are different between the two styles. There were ceramic bodied choke elements for the PICT-1 but there was a metal cap over it.
These were the two styles:
And here's how the original larger diameter PICT-1 ceramic element compares to the metal bodied style they sell now:
The PICT style choke elements are not reproduced in any form.
I've soldered a tab back on before, but it was a later style choke element. You'll need a pretty hot soldering iron or soldering gun to get it to stick.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try soldering it back on first. |

I just replaced a ceramic one with a metal one on my 64. It was the type with the metal cover on it.... Located an NOS solex metal one and it fit perfect...

Sorry to thread jack, but I thought this would be a good place to ask.
I've got ab early style 30-pict 1 Solex. I'm wanting to replace my choke (I think the spring is worn out).
It's still a 6V, and it uses the ceramic style with the toothpick (28 Pict-1 in Andy's photo).
Is there a metal one that will fit instead of the ceramic? _________________ Bill
