Probably a dumb question but should the choke elements on the carbs get warm to the touch. Recently had a short and the chokes dont look to bad. At least the little coily element inside the choke is intact. I know they recieve current from the ignition coil but are they supposed to get "hot". Thanks for any reply s in advance.

Yes.

The hotter they get, the more they open.

They are supposed to get warm, but not hot. I ran into one situation where I rebuilt an engine and could not get it to fire. I found that I didn't have spark, and I traced everything down in the ignition, and it all checked out. I was totally exasperated at that point and I was shaking my head and leaned over and put my hand on the carb and it was HOT. It turned out that the choke element had a short in it and was pulling so much current that there was not enough voltage for the ignition to produce spark. So I guess that we each have our own definition of hot, so if the engine still runs fine, it shouldn't be a problem, But if you are having starting issues, disconnect the chokes and try it again.

Yes, if you are unsure, turn the ignition on and watch them open (or not).
