|
|
I've done many searches on this and haven't exactly found what I was looking for. Will someone with experience critique my plan for dealing with seam rust on my vanagon.
First of all I don't have any rust through just seam rust and surface rust but the seam rust is coming through the other side of the seam on the inside of the van.
1. remove paint and surface rust with wire brush and sanding and get into the seam as much as possible with a wire brush.
2. Flood seams with rust bullet on both sides of seam as well as metal where there was surface rust.
3. prime with uro prime or other urethane primer.
4. fill seams with seam filler (3M Automix Heavy-Bodied Seam Sealer)
5. more primer.
6. paint
How does this sound? |

I just did it to my Vanagon. Sanded and ground out all of the surface rust. Painted with POR-15, sanded lightly and primed, wetsanded, reprimes etc and painted Van. Ask the new owner in a few years how it held up! |

I had some mild seem rust.
I wire wheeled the rust/filer out
Added POR-15
Added primer
repeat for both sides of the seems.
Wont work if rust is still in there.
Rust needs metal, air, water to continue to grow.
Do your best to minimize these, will post final paint pics soon.
Remeber to eliminate where mositure can sit. Wet fiberglass and broken plastic mositure barriers are huge causes of rust. Try to go with "closed cell" foam. Prevent considation as much as possible
will post my final pics in a month or so. _________________ 84 Retro-Westy GW 2.2L (Vincent)
