I have 2 and sometimes the switches under the gearshifter are broken or not working fine. But in your case I think the 'key-switch' is the cause. About where the radio is, there's a key or place for a key, check that and I think that's the reason.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply,

You will be glad to hear I have got it working. My only problem now is that it seems to be one speed works forward and reverse, should it be quicker in 2nd gear? What switch is broken ? Do you know where I can obtain door handles and door mirrors thanks jonny

I had one of those. Under the hood was a sticker with this 800number for service. It's worth a try 800-728-2108

Sorry for the late reply!
Normally the original battery is a combination of 2 6V batteries (my opinion), 1st gear is 6V and 2nd gear 12V. So the switches changes the selection to 1 or 2 parts of the battery in use. I changed one of my cars to a normal car-battery so it's allways 12V Laughing , it's burns the wheels when shifting from reverse to forward a bit Embarassed .
