I lived in Baja for 9 months in '95, working on a TV show that was filmed in, and around Cabo San Lucas. We rented a few beetles and busses for the show. I was stoked to be able to drive a new water cooled type 2 bus, that had a Jetta motor. It was cool, however the Mexican build, is not like a German built, for fit and finish. The manual trans was not smooth. A little disappointing. I liked the look though. Higher roofline, cloth interior, metallic paint. Went to the local VW dealer and got a few sales brochures, in Spanish, of course. I'll post a few pictures soon, as the brochures are in storage... I'd still like to have one! |

Not sure what to do. I have a 1999 Mexi-Beetle. I absolutely love it. I need a bunch of small parts, ie, taillight lenses, plugs, kick panel, gas filler seal (tube cracked), etc. This is a beautiful example. It has factory A/C and all the other advantages of the Mexi's.
Can anyone help me in finding parts for this cutie? She is so close to complete it would be a shame to quit now.

Just out of curiosity, how long do you think we will have an availability of new parts? |

I have no idea. When a spare part is not longer available, I search the same company that produced the original part used in the Beetle assembly line at Volkswagen of Mexico. _________________ Parts VW

They get shipped north where they get the death penalty with no parts removed. |
When you say North, you mean across the border, or just northern Mexico?
It's hard to believe the Mexican gov't, or some official, isn't getting something out of that deal. I'm sure they know the crusher is making money off the scrap metal. Hard to imagine they'd "give" him such a profitable resource w/o something in return. _________________ Everything known to man has been written.

Back in 2003 the Mexico City govermment signed a deal with Volkswagen of Mexico, Nissan, Ford, Chevrolet and taxi drivers unions: if the driver send the old taxi to the recycling crusher, he get a bill of credit-discount for a brand new taxi, directly from the dealership showroom.
There is not any dark-illegal bussines here. _________________ Parts VW

I really don't know. I assume you are referring to used. You can sometimes find them here in the States if you are looking for one. Antonio may be the best person to ask. In fact, I ordered parts from him. They were brand new genuine VW parts. He sent them fast and was totally honest. Priced fair too. Just in case you get want and need some parts for it. |

I did a quick search on Autotrader of Mexico, and found no air cooled bugs for sale. At this point we would need a 1990 or older car to be allowed to legally bring it into the US. Where is the fountain of air cooled Mexican bugs? _________________ 1972 Coupe |

What I would call the last generation of the Air-Cooled Beetles were manufactured from Oct 1 1992-July 31 2003. (Model years 1993-2004).
These would be the Beetles with the 1600i (ACD) engine and Digifant ignition system.
You will have to wait a few more years to legally import one of these cars into the US.
As far as finding ones for sale....
Look in www.mercadolibre.com.mx, I've seen Beetles for sale there. Also check European sites (including but not limited eBay UK, eBay Germany) as they come up for sale from time to time.
I believe that OMNICAR in Germany still has zero mileage Mexican Beetles for sale.
And, of course, Antonio is the best source for these cars! _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

|
|
I just wanted to put in a good word about Antonio Trejo, a genuine VW Dealer Parts Department On-Line Manager from Mexico City.
As a new owner of a 2003 Mexican Beetle (air cooled), I wanted to acquire spare parts unique to the Mexican air cooled Beetle. Seeing positive feedback on "the Samba" forums about Antonio I emailed him a list of the parts in question. He responded within 24 hours with a price quote as well as answering questions on availability of technical information I felt would be critical to enjoying my Beetle.
I ordered the parts on September 29th and he immediately had the parts pulled and shipped via Fed Ex. My parts arrived this morning, just 10 days later, Mexico to the USA.
Amazing service that has earned a longtime customer. Thanx Antonio, looking forward to doing business with you and your dealership in the future.

As a footnote, I was pleased to see both the throttle and clutch cables sent were of German manufacture.
