The tunnel was carpeted prior to April of 1955 or so. It was carpeted on exports and deluxe only. Standards always had rubber mat. After April '55, the rubber matting replaced carpet on exports and deluxe models.

Thanks very much! Too bad, the carpet looked much nicer. Rubber mat it is then.

From my research about 12 years ago, it varied on the carpet color, mostly by year. Early ovals in Strato were the honey brown color, later Strato cars were often gray. I used WW carpet kit for my car. It's grey/blue/purple/red and is correct for my car and my year. Yeah, I know my original seat cover is ripped... Still would rather rock that than a repro new set.

According to original documented literature posted by www.in2vws.com,
Strato Silver cars from August 1955 to April 1st, 1956, would have come with T-107 Bluish-Grey. I have no idea what that looks like. Can anyone post a picture?
My car happens to be September 1955

This is exactly how I remember mine when I tore the interior out in the 80's. I know it was all original as it had been un-running and in the family since the 70's. Nobody had touched the interior. Stupid kid I was... Pleated seats, blue with blue piping. I recall the piping being a different hue and brighter, almost dark teal. Maybe it was sun faded. The carpet might have been a tad browner due to dirt, but it was definitely grey based not honey brown oatmeal. The headliner was so waterstained due to the missing sunroof for many years but I think it was kind of a grey as well.

I have the door panels somewhere, but had dyed them black. Maybe the backside has some of the correct piping color where it's stapled.

Original carpet in my early 56. Definitely blueish grey. Happy to take some better pics of helpful. I need to source more of this for the front part of my car.

Anybody have a source?

A small detail that many people overlook is the seat piping on Strato Silver beetles that came with the dark blue leatherette vinyl. It's not white, ivory or light gray, it's almost the same color as the Strato Silver body color.

I searched for over two year, trying to locate piping that came close and nothing even came remotely close.

Fortunately, I have the original piping from my seats and door panels and was able to source it out- but the minimum cost was really expensive.

I had to pay to have tooling made for extruding the material so the thickness and diameter is identical to original.

I sold a bunch already, but If anyone is interested, I have enough left over to do a few more cars. It's $2 a linear foot. I know that sounds expensive, but it cost me a lot to have it produced and you're not going to find anything close.

My all original April of 1955 oval has the original carpet, and it's definitely a blush grey. Has anyone found a source for it? I know Wolfsburg West has the blue square weave, but I'm assuming it's too blue?

Dang, I was hoping there was a source by now lol. I hate to even remove any of my interior, but it’s just to far gone for my taste. The headliner has little holes, and it popped out at the front.

I gave up looking for honey brown for my beetle, none of the reproductions appealed to me - I went with oatmeal. It's a lot lighter but I'm happy with it.

Just google square weave carpet and there appears to be numerous places that sell the honey brown.

According to JT Garwood, an L227, '56 stratos silver type one would use 026, HONEY BROWN carpets...… and 1955 is the same - we did not like honey brown and went with stratos silver blue square weave carpet, from the Zwitter era in our 3/55 bug - WOW, found right here in thesamba classifieds...

Garwoods is incorrect then. My 56 had the bluish carpet and was original.

- i'll note your info, in my copy, from Garwood.

… I mighta' read it wrong OR wouldn't be the first time, Garwood was not completely correct - as noted above, we installed the bluish color square weave in our stratos silver '55 too, just because it looked better - bet it looks great in your '56, as well... thanks.

Actually, we have the blue-ish square weave , from a '56 in our other 2/55, as well - use that, just cause I had it...

… hats off to Garwood, just the same, for an outstanding publication - wish he was still with us, to make corrections...

Yeah so, here's my blue-ish square weave - from a '56 in our 2/55 onna' '65 pan...
